When I read this, I couldn't help but think something was wrong with the current way that things are displayed. For example, if you have to say this:

"Don't worry about all the choices!"

Then, we're probably not displaying our choices in a way that best fits our users.

I think that much more factoring needs to take place to make Moodle more friendly to first-time users while at the same time more friendly to power users, too. Changes like this one suggested by Ian, or further separation of "Advanced" features into clusters that can be hidden away and shown only when selected really need more attention.
I really have to applaud you for your efforts here and I hope that the Moodle programmers really listen to your ideas because good design is the next logical step for Moodle to take. I've spent the past two years designing themes around Moodle.

I'm very excited about the work that Tim Hunt is currently doing to give theme designers more control over the layout for Moodle 2.0. I hope that the trend is that the core programmers will continue to listen to people like you who can explain their design vision quite well.
