Nice one Gareth. I also volunteered earlier to moderate spam over the weekend but to be honest I am not so sure now. I am disillusioned. I'd prefer that HQ put into action their words that the open source community still means a lot to them. And in the interests of balance - I do understand that employees have working conditions and should be allowed time off (such as weekends) i was in the unusual position that my job (in the week) was also my hobby (in the evenings and weekends) so I could use my moderation rights out of hours to zap spam. That is no longer the case. It should be possible however for the support team to do shifts surely? Assuming the spam moderation is considered important?

A few comments from me and then I am going to take a break again (as I failed to do so at the end of the year) Seeing the community site like this - still, as we head into the third week of January -is disturbing to me.  I want to clarify a few things but cannot of course speak officially.

Re Gareth's Things didn't use to be this bad, or haven't been for ages especially with the 'Report to moderator' link, so something has changed. The report to moderator link still works exactly the same as before. What has changed is that forum zapping and other issues like splitting, moving, comments spam is now done by a new global support team (thus in different timezones). I don't know what is happening about weekend spam.

The Report to moderator link actually goes not to a "moderator" who can't delete spam accounts anyway, but to the HQ team who have permissions to remove spam accounts and who review each report manually. (See the 'reporting posts' content in the Get Involved in the Moodle.org community forums course)

Also Gareth's point about moderators being able to delete a spam post and the post still being retained for those who have permissions to delete spam accounts is quite correct. I personally am not deleting any posts, partly because I had actually planned to stay away for a few weeks and partly because I'm not sure if HQ still wants me as moderator of those forums.  I don't want to step on anybody's toes.

Also in response to the comment about what about forums without moderators - well - anybody can click the Report to moderator link, and for forums without moderators, it doesn't matter because the support team have moderator rights everywhere in Moodle in English.  Also I was told before I left that HQ team members responsible for various components of Moodle would be more proactive monitoring the forums. That will be good when it happens. Some of them already do, as I am sure you have noticed.

Now I really am going to try to stay away from Moodle until everything settles down smile
