Regulatory capture (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulatory_capture) is simply a fact of life in strongly capitalist economies & part of the campaigning & negotiation progress. It's not an excuse to abandon regulation.

As I noted above, countries are starting to regulate big tech in ways that Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple Inc, Facebook, etc., object to & lobby strongly against.

Governments in Australia, Canada, & the EU are taking increasingly more regulatory stances against the worst excesses of big tech & of course, our media gets flooded with how terrible an idea this is & that our children will starve & the sky will fall in.

That big tech are making so much noise & being so hysterical is a good sign. Let's not regurgitate their rhetoric but stick to discussing the reasons why they need regulation in the first place! 😉

It's a nice idea & definitely worth doing to raise awareness.

At the same time, we desperately need regulation at national & international levels; parents & individuals are being constantly bombarded with PR & marketing from big tech designed to delay, misdirect, & confuse, & of course, big tech has close to unlimited resources & political influence to get their messages across over anyone else's. People don't know what the harms are or what to do & as things are it's difficult for individuals to "cut themselves off" or cut off their teenage children from these internet services.

However, we're starting to see governments taking good advice & get serious about the issues, e.g. with harm caused to young people in:

Australia: https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2025/12/05/what-is-australias-under-16-social-media-ban-the-world-first-law-explained.html

and perhaps France: https://www.france24.com/en/france/20251231-france-to-debate-social-media-ban-for-children-under-15

and other countries are also weighing up the evidence & thinking about regulation.

There's also another issue with big tech's power over populations & countries; that our governments & businesses are, to a large extent, dependent on them. Prof. Harald Wehnes calls it digital colonialism & it's costing the UK & EU countries $10's billions every year. It's a drag on our economies. It also leaves our governments & democratic institutions vulnerable to coercion & manipulation, e.g. digital sanctions against the ICC after their adjudications over Israeli activities in Gaza & the West Bank. Big tech & by extension the US government can bankrupt EU companies simply by cutting off their digital services; it happened recently to a Dutch bank.

Here's a write-up of an interview with Prof. Harald Wehnes with the original interview & the transcript. It makes for scary reading!: https://matbury.com/wordpress/index.php/2025/11/01/digital-sovereignty-or-digital-colony-a-wake-up-call-for-europe/

Countries outside the USA desperately need to develop their own, sovereign tech services so that they're not beholden &/or vulnerable to foreign administrations' conflicts of interest.

Wow, I joined the Moodle community in 2006 too, although I've never been paid by Moodle HQ... well done! 😂

You've been a constant presence & I can confidently claim that your impact on Moodle & the Moodle community has been substantial & greatly appreciated.

Does this mean we won't hear your voice on future Moodle "latest features" videos?! 😲

You'll be sorely missed. Best of luck with your retirement! 🎁

This article resonated with me. I think it's especially applicable to the language learning apps that have become popular in recent years.

What do you think? How far do you agree or disagree & what would you add? 🤓

"Why Most Education Apps Fail

The non-negotiable conditions for learning don't care whether instruction comes from a teacher, a parent, or an algorithm but they do care about certain invariants.
