You can have a look at my own OrangeChoc theme, one of the very rare 2-columns themes in the database. Like you, I personally find that the 3 columns prevalent in Moodle Themes are confusing and not so sleek. That was especially true a few years ago, when we were using smaller screens. Now that computer screens have grown much larger as a standard feature (except for netwooks), there is a lot of space for accomodating 3 columns.

Thanks for the link, Ralf. Curiously on the addon page a fairly large number of users complain that "it does not work".

Works fine for me on FF 3.5.6. However I found that the provided icon is too large and takes up valuable screen space (vertically). So I reduced that icon to 1pixel, added the Clear Cache label to my WebDeveloper bar and now it's fine (see screenshot).
