Lave & Wenger's 1991 book is really worth a read - quite short so good to read on a library loan.
This site is a good example of situated learning in that participants are learning about applying Moodle to their practice through using Moodle.

I don't know exactly where that info would be but Using Moodle, maybe User authentication, would be a good place to start.
I think that you should try the developers forums in Using Moodle. First try searching the forums, then ask for clarifications. You'll get on better there than in the Social forum.
