How do you award credentials for course completions? (poll — we built a tool)

Hi Moodle community,

I'm one of the founders of badges.ninja — a digital credentialing platform built specifically for educators and academies who want something more flexible than Moodle's built-in badges but more affordable than enterprise tools like Credly.

I'd love your input on a few questions below. This is genuine product research — your answers will directly shape what we build next. Full transparency: I have a stake in the answer, but I also genuinely want to understand what's missing in the market.

A bit of context on why we built badges.ninja:

We kept running into the same wall: Credly is priced for enterprise teams. Certifier starts at $119/month. Moodle's native badges are Open Badge compliant but the visual customization is very limited and learners don't always know what to do with them.

So we built something in between — a visual badge designer with 80+ templates, full Open Badge v2.0 compliance, IPFS storage (so credentials are permanent and decentralized), REST API on all plans, and blockchain verification on the Pro tier. Pricing: Free / $9/mo / $29/mo.

We've had Texas A&M University, UNINETTUNO, and a few dozen other organizations use it so far, but we're still very much learning what educators actually need day-to-day.

Honest question: is digital badging a real pain point for you, or something you've just never had time to prioritize? Both answers are useful to us.

Badge improvements: Bulk actions, Expiry notification

I have a couple of tracker items I have worked on I'd like to get into core, but need some input/votes

Bulk action on badges - including deletion. There was a bug in Moodle that created lots of badges, so wanted a way to bulk manage the situation.
Notify participants when badges expire - we have lots of badges that expire on a date or a time after being issued. I wanted teachers to optionally message the participants when the badge expires - perhaps to allow them to take a refresher.

Badges multiplying (98200!) - anyone found the solution?

If you were able to test it, that would also be good.

Badge Criteria ' complete after Date' not available?

Good morning, I know I am very outdated here. I have a 4.0 site ready but did not have time to move my courses before the semester started.

Is there a way to use a 'Complete After Date' instead of 'Complete By Date' as a badge criteria?

Hi, I have Moodle 4.5.5 installed, and I have badges configured in some courses based on the completion of certain activities. When I check the ad hoc task `\core\task\badges_adhoc_task`, I see that it's not working correctly and is expiring. What could be causing this? I've noticed that some of the tasks used to award badges are hidden; could that be the reason?

If you set up Activity completion for the self-assessment activity then you can use it as the criterion for awarding the badge. For more details, see the documentation Using badges.
