Adaptable is a highly customisable responsive two column theme based on the popular BCU theme. Adaptable has all the features of BCU along with many new features:

  • Front page Marketing Blocks. You can display Up to 60 custom blocks with different layout.
  • Layout Builders! You can now define a custom layout to add blocks using drag and drop for:
    • Front Page
    • Footer
    • Dashboard
    • Course Page
  • Fully Customisable:
    • Fonts
    • Colors
    • Block styles (including icons)
    • Buttons (including radius)
  • Choice of two sliders on home page with custom colours
  • News / Announcements Ticker on Home / Dashboard
  • Multiple front page course styles
  • Extensive custom menus (can be targeted to different users based on custom profile field)
  • "My Courses" list can be organised to put older courses in sub menu item
  • Dismissible Bootstrap Alerts
    • Display site-wide notices using different Bootstrap styles
    • Allow users to dismiss alerts once read (persistent between page loads / login)
    • Allow re-use of alerts (display again even if user has dismissed) buy updating a "key" field
  • Additional layout settings for width, slider width, padding of various elements
  • Social icons or Search box in header (admin can choose between the two)
  • Activities and Resources Adaptable icon pack improved
  • Support for Social Wall Course Format (thanks to Chris Kenniburg for help on this)
  • Support for Grid Course Format (thanks to Gareth J Barnard for help on this)
  • Mobile settings
  • Option to add login form in header on front page
  • Favicon uploader
  • Background image uploader
  • Activities status NEW!

In addition many fields (menus, news items, alerts and help links) can be targeted using custom profile fields, thus it is possible to present different users with different navigation items and notices.

It is also possible for individual users to customise where they want top menu navigation to appear (disable, home pages only, site wide) using custom profile fields.

Adaptable has a lot of settings and may seem daunting at first, our advice is to simply install with the default settings and play with it afterwards.

With a little time you should be able to set up an attractive Moodle site with a high degree of individuality without without knowing any CSS.

  • Adaptable is a fork of BCU theme and owes its existence to all those credited on that theme
  • Adaptable development was driven by 3bits e-learning solutions and Coventry University
  • Persistence of Bootstrap Alerts provided by Justin Hunt in between mowing lawns and brokering cease fires (see his Moodle Services page
  • Ideas on Social Wall support provided by Chris Kenniburg
  • Help with renderers and other tricky stuff provided by Mary Evans and Gareth J Barnard
  • Additional support provided by New School Learning
  • Thanks to Bas Brands for helping fixing some issues and adding new features.
  • And many thanks to all the volunteers, developers, translators and users for its continuous support.

Documentation coming soon.

    After upgrading to Moodle 3.3.2, theme Adaptable (version 1.5.2) did not show help popups correctly (as tooltips), instead opening the help text in a new browser window/tab (please let me know if this was only an isolated case).

    Solved it by adding the following code after line number 59, in moodledir/theme/adaptable/layout/includes/header.php:

    // Setup help icon overlays.
    $this->page->requires->yui_module('moodle-core-popuphelp', 'M.core.init_popuphelp');
    ), 'moodle');

    Maybe a refined fix can be included in subsequent Adaptable versions...

    Hi Team,
    This is not a bug as such but a handy workaround for those that use the H5P document activity and embed it in to a lesson.

    Since the release of the ability to embed, by using this code was giving us an empty "export document" pane.

    So scenario is.

    H5P activity Document tool - Stand alone activity - Export document works.

    Embed in to a lesson - empty "export document" pane.

    Via the very helpful Thomas of the H5P team, the workaround is to add this in to your Custom CSS & JS.

    .hidden .joubel-create-document {display:block;visibility:visible;}

    the theory behind this..

    In your style sheets, for your theme (adaptable, I think) I found the following css rule:

    It is a very general rule which will hide all elements that have the .hidden class on them.
    The Export Page (within Documentation Tool) has the .hidden class on one of its parents, which is why the page is hidden.

    The reason why this is different from when the H5P is used standalone is that the stylesheets from Moodle is included in the embed code, but not when the H5P is in its' own iFrame/standalone.

    The issue can be resolved by adding the following line to your theme, and should be so specific that it will not cause any regression issues with the rest of your site:
    .hidden .joubel-create-document {display:block;visibility:visible;}

    Thanks for your comment. Please use our tracker to report bugs or request improvements: or use the moodle forum for questions.

    Anyway, this is an H5P issue. The CSS code indicated is part of BS2, not Adaptable. The plugin code is wrong using a hidden class when the element is no hidden.

    Hi, I have two issues.
    1. I put some custom css and it is workable on all pages, except Front Page (some css for collapsible text placed in Marketing Box).
    2. I use slider, but with only one picture. How to remove arrows on right/left side.

    Hello. Can I use your theme to add icons for categories. For example in the topic "Essential". It would be very cool.

    Hi Kenneth,

    Thanks for reporting the bug with stealth activities in Adaptable, we have fixed that in our GIT repository and should have an update here on Moodle.Org in the next couple of hours.

    Trying to add blocks to the bottom of the course page, the main course page as well as all pages in the course. I found you "Course page bottom region" but it only added the regions to the right side where other blocks are currently. When I clicked the Common settings > Common settings for most of the course formats to Move sidebar to footer on Course page theme_adaptable, it moved all the blocks (which I was not surprised about). Is there a way to have a right side region for some of the blocks and a bottom region for some of the other blocks?

    I would like to use the flexible format together with the Adaptable theme. While it works, the visual (css) does not look as good as the topic format on Adaptable (or the flexible format over boost theme).
    Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what should I modify to have "the same effect"?
    The biggest issue is that sections and subsections are not been displayed separetedly, with bound boxes, white spaces or any enclosures.

    Can you make the layout graphics on this page larger, instead of just thumbnails so I can use them more easily for reference?
