StudentQuiz enables students to collaboratively create their own question pools within Moodle. Students can filter these questions into quizzes, and they can rate and comment on questions while working through the quizzes. StudentQuiz computes each students contribution and learning progress and compares this with the community. The created questions become part of the Moodle question bank and can be reused in other Moodle quizzes.

Students like questions to help them prepare for exams. However, it’s hard to provide enough questions for many self-assessments and exams. That’s one reason why the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil developed the Moodle plugin StudentQuiz. StudentQuiz enables students to collaboratively create their own question pools within Moodle. Even if an individual student contributes a few questions only, a large cohort could easily build up an extensive question pool.

In StudentQuiz, students can filter questions into quizzes, and they can rate and comment on questions while working through the quizzes. StudentQuiz collects usage data for each question and ranks students based on their contribution and performance within the quizzes. A personal learning assistance feature displays the individual progress and compares it with the community average. The created questions become part of the Moodle question bank and can be reused in other Moodle quizzes.

A teacher can configure:

  • whether students’ names are displayed or kept anonymous.
  • what questions types are allowed to be added to the pool.
  • the number of points assigned to questions contributed and answers given.

There are more benefits of using StudentQuiz. Find out in our 15 minutes introduction video.

StudentQuiz has been tested on Moodle 3.1 to 3.5 and is available in Chinese, English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and other languages. Please feel free to add your language to the AMOS translator.

The simplest way to install the StudentQuiz is by going to the Site administration -> Plugins -> Install plugins page.

You can try StudentQuiz without installing on the StudentQuiz Demo Page.

For changes and instructions please read the Release Notes.

You can find manuals for each role in the manuals website.

Supported and tested with:

  • Moodle 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5
  • PHP 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2

Hi Joseph, thank you for the friendly feedback. Are you using MariaDB? StudentQuiz was developed for MySQL and PostgreSQL. However, we're currently working to ship it for MariaDB as well. Sp please stay tuned for the next upgrade.

    @Frank Koch
Hi Frank, I was wondering if you could take a look at a request for help on the themes forum
where a Moodler 'Ollie' is wanting to override a renderer from mod_studentquiz. I do not have a clue and there is no where to move the post so you are my last hope that a solution can be found for Ollie!

I really like this plugin and am using it in a number of courses now.
But we have a problem with the layout/rendering of the student quiz especially on the teacher side. The columns for: question, created by, date, and tags are horribly squished together and almost impossible to read.
I think in your videos you use a different layout. We still have the 1/4 left Nav +3/4 content layout.
Do you have any ideas on how we can fix this on our end?

    Thanks a lot

    Hello Hendrik

StudentQuiz is not yet optimized for mobile devices, however, it renders well even on smaler size monitors. I would recommend you hide the navigation panel because this gives you much more screen width. You can do so by clicking the Hamburger-icon in the upper left corner of Moodle.

We're planning to create a MoodleMobile version, which will also ease your problem, but please don't expect it before chistmas.

    Kind regards, Frank

Thanks Frank for the prompt reply.
Our current Moodle setup doesn't have that burger-icon sad.
I'll talk to our IT support.

What happens internally when you delete questions. We must have accidentally lost 60 questions from students (still not clear how) and our IT department has been struggling to find them in the system. Do they get hard deleted or is it just a flag or relationship that gets deleted?

If you delete a question within StudentQuiz, you will be prompted a warning first. If you confirm, then the question will be deleted from the database and you cannot revoke this step.

I'm just guessing: maybe you have accidentially *moved" the questions into another category. In this case you'll find them there.

I'm not sure how this happened. I remember when approving a large batch of questions a confirmation window came up and for some reason didn't respond to a button click and I pressed again. maybe that click got buffered and then applied to the underlying delete button?
We tried finding the questions in the question bank in other categories but we don't see them anywhere. In fact, it's not possible from the student quiz to see any other student quiz categories. Is this something that IT support has to address/enable?

The questions are hosted within the particular StudentQuiz activity. You can access the question bank from inside a StudentQuiz activity (just click the gear-icon to get there).

You can also move the questions from the StudentQuiz activity into higher question bank categories, like the course level.

We might setup a short Skype session and I could guide you on the screen. I would be available in the evenings and on Monday.

Frank, right now I'm listening to you presenting StudentQuiz at the Barcelona MoodleMoot. This looks great. We will certainly use this plugin. Thanks for contributing it and congratulations to you and your team!

    Hi Frank,

we are using the plugin in one of our courses and the teacher tells us that in two different times he has lost all the students' questions. The teacher did not delete the questions and did not move the questions into other categories. What could have happened?
    Thanks a lot

    Hello Barbara,
You can move questions into other categories, but your teacher seems to not have done that. So I don't know how this might have happened. Please let me know if you're able to reproduce this.
    Regards, Frank
