MC Offline quiz module

The Moodle MC Offline quiz module adds paper-and-pencil multiple-choice quizzes to Moodle. In offline quizzes students mark answers to questions on a sheet of paper (the answer form). The students' answer forms are evaluated and graded automatically by the offline quiz module.

More precisely, a complete offline quiz consists (at least) of the following steps:

  • A teacher creates an offline quiz in Moodle and adds multiple-choice questions, all-or-nothing multiple-choice questions or description questions (text) to the quiz. This is very similar to creating online quizzes (standard Moodle quizzes).
  • From the question lists the teacher creates question sheets and answer forms as PDF (DOCX) documents using the module.
  • The question sheets and answer forms are handed out to students for the actual quiz. The students mark the answers they think are correct in the answer form.
  • The teacher scans the filled-in answer forms and uploads the resulting images into the offline quiz. The scanned answer forms are evaluated and graded automatically by the module.
  • If necessary, the teacher corrects errors that might have occurred due to mistakes made by the students or due to bad scan quality.

After results have been created in an offline quiz, students can review their result as usual. If the teacher allows it, students can also see the scanned answer forms and which markings have been recognised as crosses.

The module supports up to six groups which are not related to Moodle course groups. Each group can contain a different set of questions in a different order. Separate question sheets and answer forms are created for the different offline quiz groups.

The module also supports lists of participants which are useful for checking which students actually took part in the exam. Lists of participants are pre-filled with students in Moodle. PDF versions of those lists can be created in the module for easy marking during the exam. The marked lists can be uploaded and evaluated automatically.

Example

The offline quiz module is used intensively at different Austrian universities for mass exams. Hundreds of students can be easily examined at the same time (given enough seating space in lecture halls) without the need for expensive e-testing equipment.

Installation

Copy the module code directly to the "mod/offlinequiz" directory. Open the messages page in the administration area to automatically start the installation.

The automatic analysis of questionnaires requires the activation of an appropriate cronjob (see README.txt).

Admin settings

As an administrator you can set the default values instance-wide on the settings page for administrators in the MC Offline quiz module.

  • formula for participant identification (text field)
  • mix questions (checkbox)
  • mix answers (checkbox)
  • logo URL (text field)
  • copyright indication (checkbox)
  • settings for exam inspection (checkbox)
  • decimal places (drop down)
  • paper's white level (drop down)
  • 1-click inscription (checkbox)
  • role for inscription (drop down)
  • saving days (text field)

    Two issues
    1. Is there way to numbering the questions.?
    2. Can the marks for the questions be displayed?

Is it possible to include short answer question?

1.) Aren't they numbered already? the numbers are generated automatically during document creation time
2.) You can do that by changing the settings for "Print question grades" in your offlinequiz-instance
3.) At the moment only single-choice, Multiple-choice and description-questions are allowed. Any other question types are not supported.

Student ID. Our Student ID is alphanumeric, with four (4) letters of the student's last name, and four (4) assigned numbers, such as bene2078. How do we change the paper quiz to allow for entering this id? Or are we misunderstanding the Matrikelnummer?

Hi Troy, this is sadly not possible. The matriculation number has to be numeric.

Thank you for this plugin. Just want to confirm something: is there no 'passing grade' like the stock standard Quiz activity? (in case it matters, I'm running this on a 3.5). I'd be really keen to hear how you would pass someone (Eg offline quiz being the only assessment) in your context if there's no 'passing grade'. Any thoughts/insights appreciated!

I think I've worked out my own question - 'passing grade' is available via the Gradebook.

Course Administration -> Gradebook setup -> Edit [of the Offline Quiz] -> Edit settings -> Show more ... and voila! 'Grade to pass' is available!

Sorry to bother again. 'Grade to pass' is available to set in the Gradebook. However, if a student receives a grade lower than the 'Grade to pass' in the Offline Quiz, the activity is marked 'complete (but did not achieve passing grade'. This unfortunately still counts as a completion - and in turn allows the student to complete the course (if the course completion criteria is based on that activity alone).

Is there a way to only indicate 'Activity completion' when 'Grade to pass' is met/exceeded - like the stock standard Quiz activity?

    Any pointers appreciated.

I have the matriculation number issue too, since my students have alphabetical ID now.

Do you think that this solution could be workable :
    - A number is assigned to each participant (00000001 , 00000002 , 00000003, etc.)
    - This numbers can be printed in the participant lists, for example
    - Scanned answer forms are associated with correct students thanks to this number.

    INFORMATION:
    - mod_offlinequiz_moodle34_2018011602.zip
    - Moodle 3.4.1
    - Oracle 12c

We have activated the CRON line that you mention in your documentation:
    */10 * * * * DATE=`date +\%Y\%m\%d`; php /mod/offlinequiz/cron.php --cli=1 >> /var/log/moodle/cron-olq.log.$DATE 2>&1

And we get the following read error in the database:
ERROR: ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected - got CLOB

We would be grateful if you could give us a possible solution to an Oracle database on the fields of type CLOB.

    Thank you.

    Hi !
Thank you for this great plugin !
I tried this morning to include questions using formulas edited with LateX Notation. Formulas appear correctly in the Preview section, but when I edit PDF, Offline Quiz seems unable to find and include the Gif created in moodledata/temp/offlinequiz. Is it normal ? Or does it comes from my MoodleData ?
    Thank for your answer !

    Hello.

Thanks for your plugin, it has the potential to make a complicated process well managed and easy to run for teachers, it's great and I'm considering it's possible usage in my university.

I hope it's ok if i ask a few questions about a few things that i don't know if it's small bugs or incorrect usage on my side.

    1) What should be the proper way to handle the ID when it is not prefixed by zeros in moodle ? E.G. for the student that have the id "42" in moodle i have tried to write 0000042 or just 42, but no student identification is made. If i change the id number in moodle to be also 0000042 it works, but i don't think it's wise to change the way our data is formated in production. Possibly related issue : https://github.com/academic-moodle-cooperation/moodle-mod_offlinequiz/issues/51

    2) When editing the question, moodle often end a line with the additional "br", even when already inside a paragraph. It does not show in the HTML view of moodle, but when on paper, it takes some amount of vertical space and couple of unnecessary pages is not as eco-frienly as it could be smile Would you consider automatically suppressing those extra blank line at the end of the question text and choices to be a better solution ?

    3) Is the marking supposed to be detected to automatically adjust the page position during the scan recognition ? I can anticipate some teachers would don't know how to disable the automatically added margins, even with the reminder (it shrinks a bit and add margins to make sure the content is in the printable zone for A4). They would only discover after the exam that the papers all need to be adjusted ? In my attempt, the recognition failed if i had those margins. Possible related issue (2006) : https://github.com/academic-moodle-cooperation/moodle-mod_offlinequiz/issues/18

If you would prefer this posted as github issues, or that i contribute to the existing ones, please tell me.

    Best regards,

    Stephane

When using Latex in the quiz question, the Latex functions and symbols do not display in-line with the regular question text. Looking forward to a fix.
