BigBlueButton is an open source web conferencing system for distance education.  The goal of the project is to enable universities, colleges, and K12 to delivery a high-quality learning experience to remote students.

BigBlueButton supports real-time sharing of slides (including whiteboard), audio, video, chat, and desktops.  It also record all content for later playback.

The BigBlueButton project was started in 2008 by Blindside Networks.  In addition our work on BigBlueButton core, we created this Moodle 2.x activity module so you can fully leverage BigBlueButton's capabilities from within your courses.

This module enables you to:

  • Create multiple activity links to on-line sessions within a course
  • Restrict students from joining a session until a teacher (moderator) joins the session
  • Launch BigBlueButton in a separate window
  • Create a custom welcome message that appears at the top of the chat window when joining the session
  • Specify join open/close dates for the session that appears in the Moodle's calendar
  • Record a session (requires BigBlueButton 0.8 or later)
  • Access and mange recordings (requires installation of recordingsbn)

The following YouTube video to demonstrate how to use this plugin (you can skip the first part on installation if your installing from moodle.org)

Note: If you are installing manually, the video shows uncompressing a single ZIP file that contains two modules: mod/bigbluebuttonbn (create BigBlueButton activity links) and mod/recordingsbn (access recordings).  This is equivalent to installing both bigbluebuttonbn and recordingsbn.

The BigBlueButtonBN module works out-of-the-box with test-install.blindsidenetworks.com, a BigBlueButton server that Blindside Networks maintains for the community to help test your installation with BigBlueButton.

For information on setting up your own BigBlueButton server, see http://bigbluebutton.org/.

    Hi,
I have some functionality problems between the latest versions of the plugin and my 0.81 server.
Are there compatibility issues with the older versions of the BBB server and are they listed somewhere ?
    Thanks

Installed the suggested new version on Moodle 2.6.1 and creates a Syntax Error, only the former version worked. Tried to report this on tracker.moodle but didn't showed this Moodle version to make the report, so maybe you are already aware.

Hi Brijesh, you can definitely use your own BigBlueButton server. Use the bbb-conf command to get the URL and shared secret for your server (see http://docs.bigbluebutton.org/install/bbb-conf.html#secret) and then configure the BigBlueButtonBN (using the administrator settings for the plugin) to use your server instead of test-install. Enjoy.

    Hi Fred Dixon,
When we replace the path from "http://test-install.blindsidenetworks.com/bigbluebutton/" to our host name FROM ADMIN SECTION then we got an error like Unable to join the meeting. Please check the url of the BigBlueButton server AND check to see if the BigBlueButton server is running.
    Thanks

Hi José, there is no mobile client for BigBlueButton 1.0. We are working on a HTML5 client for mobile access. For more details see: http://docs.bigbluebutton.org/html/html5-overview.html.
