This filter allows questions from the question bank to be embedded anywhere that users can input HTML. This can be used in various ways. It can be a way to make learning materials more interactive. For example you may wish to embed question in a Book, or a Page, or even a Label. Or perhaps a student asks in a forum about some tricky grammar concept, and you have a question that illustrates your reply, well now you can include that qustion in your reply, so the student can immediately test their understanding.

It is designed to be used with the associated Atto editor plugin which makes it easier to set up the embedding.

You can only embed questions which have an idnumber set, and where the category the question is in has an idnumber. This is for two reasons: first, so you don't accidentally embed the questions from your end-of-course exam; and second, because this is how the filter uniquely identifies the question you want.

This plugin was created by the Open University, UK.

how to add an ID to a question?

In the Moodel question bank. Both questions and categories can be edited. Both have a Name. If you are not sure how, this is in the standard Moodle documentation.

(Just to complicate matters, in Moodle 3.6 there is a new field 'Id number' on questions and categories, and my colleage Mahmoud is just working on converting this plugin to use that instead of putting it in the name, so the instructions will change at some point, but that is in the future.)

Are you planning on implementing a feature of permanent saving student's submitted input? It would be helpful for a student as a form of personal notes during lessons.

We are planning to do that. It is currently not clear when we will have time.

Is it possible to use the essay question type? I've tried it and it embeds but there is no submit button?

Basically, it is not possible. That might change in future.

To simulate the embedded essay question with reference answer I combine a html textarea field with a collapsible regions filter

@ Paul Gillary: it's on the 'To think about' list, but we're not sure when we'll get around to it.
Essentially we need to store student responses first (which is our next priority alongside getting Embedded Moodle Quiz Questions to working the Moodle App) before we can think about how to handle Essay. If we do address Embedded Essay, it might only be usable as an ungraded essay, where submitting just saves the inputted text and also shows general feedback (so no ability for a tutor to manually mark).
It would have been cleverer of us to release this feature with a filter excluding Essay completely, but I didn't think about that at the time. Sorry. But Ger Tielemans' response sounds like a viable workaround.

No, No the idea of the workaround is that during the formative learning process the student - while reading a text - is invited to reflect on that text by answering an in-line question. That essay answer is not stored, it is only needed during the compare process: we assume that the student makes an "a-ha" note in her/his personal journal, for example with the "my notes" plugin or in an old fashion paper notebook.

Well done to everyone involved in this plugin. @tim - how much would it take capture the responses. I note that you've commented in 2018 that it is a lot more work. I'm wondering has any progress been made on this since then or is it a project you would consider if we could crowd source funding

@Mark: we had originally planned to start working on it now (originally as a "One year anniversary" release for September), but as is the way of things, other higher-priority projects have landed in our laps. But we are hoping to look at adding response-storage soon, and that version might be available in December-February. Not that we've been idle on this feature since initial release - following user feedback, we've been making some improvements to display, and the latest version allows "random from category" questions. We'll publish that in a couple of weeks (as we'll have to also check Moodle 3.7 compatibility etc.)

Hi Tim, I have installed version 2018111900 in a 3.5 Moodle. Added 2 questions in a course quiz category. Also installed the Atto button. The dropdown on category however remains empty. Am I missing something?

Thanks Tim read about the ID but thought the 3.5 version could do without, reading the instructions I got it to work
