GroupDocs Comparison Block for Moodle is a universal web-based document comparison tool that allows you and your website visitors to compare two Word documents, PDF files, Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations right on your Moodle website. The main benefit of such an approach is that it can handle cross-platform/version incompatibilities when managing document revisions. In order to compare two versions of a document with this block, neither you nor your website visitors need to download or install any additional software, including the one that the documents were originally created with. Instead, documents can be compared online, and all you need for that is a modern web-browser.

Compare Two Documents of Almost Any File Format

GroupDocs Comparison supports all common business document formats. With this tool you can compare two Word documents (including DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOT, DOTM, DOTX, TXT, RTF, ODT), PowerPoint presentations (PPT, PPTX), HTML documents and Excel spreadsheets (XLS, XLSX, CSV).

How The Document Comparison Block Works

Please note. To use the GroupDocs Comparison tool, you need to register with us. first. We offer a free 14-day trial so that you can test everything before buying our service. 1. Once you’ve created an account at GroupDocs, install the GroupDocs Comparison Block on your Moodle website, using this instruction. 2. Now, using this block, you can seamlessly embed documents that you want to compare into your Moodle web-pages. GroupDocs will convert the documents into HTML5 so that they will be rendered as real text documents, not flash or images. 3. GroupDocs Comparison will merge the documents automatically and highlight all differences between the two versions. Added text and formatting is highlighted with underlines and removed text - with strikeouts. 4. You can invite your colleagues, partners or clients to review the compared documents right on your Moodle website. And thanks to using HTML5 technology, website visitors don't need to install any browser plugins or Flash in order to view the compared documents - any modern web-browser can handle the embedded documents itself. 5. When you compare two Word documents, you can merge them and save as a single DOC or DOCX file with the Change Tracking feature turned on. The document can then be edited offline by accepting or rejecting differences between the two document versions.

Many thanks for sharing this plugin with the Moodle community. I noticed that you have a version for Moodle 2.4 which does not have the addinstance capability defined. This is required for all blocks in Moodle 2.4 - you can find more information about this at http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Blocks#db.2Faccess.php. I would also recommend that you consider renaming the Github.com repository to follow the Moodle naming convention which is moodle-{plugintype}_{pluginname} - so for this plugin it would be moodle-block_groupdocs_comparison. For now I am going to mark this as needing more work while you tidy up these details. It also helps if you provide a tracker URL - most likely the link to Github issues for your repository. I appreciate your patience with this review process. Please do not hesitate to let me know if there is anything I can do to be supportive of your efforts. Peace - Anthony

It looks like you may have fixed the issues in Github.com. I would still encourage you to rename the repository moodle-block_groupdocs_comparison as the current name and setup is inconsistent with the way that branches in repositories are normally handled. If you could create a MOODLE_19_STABLE branch and then a MOODLE_24_STABLE branch. I would also encourage using the default Moodle license language for the version.php as found in http://docs.moodle.org/dev/version.php. Until the new version is provided, I am going to mark this as needing more work but I would also recommend using the time to tidy up the Github repository. Once things are ready, just add a new version of the files and I will review them. Peace - Anthony

From what I can see the Github repository name still has -source appended to it and has directories instead of branches for the different versions. The more recently uploaded files here in Moodle Plugins do not have the version of Moodle selected for which they are intended to work and thus are not showing up as the latest version. That is likely what made me think that you had changed things on Github and not here in Moodle Plugins. For now, I'm going to mark this as needing more work. I would really like to get the Github repository fixed up so that the branches are being used properly. Peace - Anthony

OK, I see that you did create a new repository moodle-block_groupdocs_comparison but did not update the URL here in Moodle plugins. The new repository contains zip files but it is better if the branch contains the actual files. See something like https://github.com/arborrow/moodle-block_birthday for an example. If you have questions, just let me know. Peace - Anthony
