Atto: PoodLL Anywhere(Atto)

Maintained by Picture of Justin Hunt Justin Hunt
PoodLL Anywhere(Atto) allows the user to record audio and video or draw pictures, or snap pictures, directly into forum posts, assignment descriptions, page resource content, question descriptions, question responses and other areas.

The Moodle PoodLL Anywhere plugin for Atto.

It allows the user to record audio and video or draw pictures, or snap pictures, directly into forum posts, assignment descriptions, page resource content, question descriptions, question responses and other areas.

The recorders available are:
i) audio (red5)
ii) audio (mp3)
iii) video (red5)
iv) whiteboard
v) snapshot

They can be hidden or shown using the settings found at:
site admin -> plugins -> text editors -> Atto html editor -> poodll anywhere

In some cases the Moodle text editor may be set to not allow uploaded files. Notably the question response area when using an essay question type, or in forum posts where attachments may be restricted or forbidden. In that situation PoodLL Anywhere tries to play nicely and will hide the PoodLL Anywhere icons. Using the Moodle capabilities system it is also possible to hide and
show icons depending on the user's role.

The capabilities available to be set are:

Install PoodLL anywhere by unzipping it and putting the "poodll" folder in
[moodle]/lib/editors/Atto/plugins then visit your site
administration -> notifications page and follow the prompts for Moodle to install it.

It will not appear on the Atto toolbar immediately and you will need to visit:
Site administration / Plugins / Text editors / Atto HTML editor / Atto toolbar settings
Right near the bottom of the page, beneath the list of plugins find the "Toolbar Config" textbox. There, probably on the "files" line add the word "poodll".
That line will then look like this:
files = image, media, poodll,

ToolBar Config Image

* NOTE: PoodLL Anywhere depends on the PoodLL Filter also being installed, and will not install or work properly without it *

* NOTE: PoodLL Anywhere for Atto is based on PoodLL Anywhere for TinyMCE, which was funded by Birmingham City University. *

I think you mean that in some places in Moodle, the PoodLL icons don't appear.

That is because those areas do not accept file uploads/attachments. So you are also unable to access the repository system from the Moodle Media or Moodle Image icons, in those locations.

In that case there is not much we can do. But it is possible to use the PoodLL Feedback plugin in the assignment at least to give audio/video feedback.

As you can see, i can't record the video because que red circle buttom is not avaiable. Can anyone tell me what is the problem?

This occurs when you cannot get a connection to the Red5 server. This could occur because of your own network connectivity issues, or because of problems on PoodLL's Tokyo Red5 server, or because of configuration problems.

Actually it is most likely the Tokyo server was overloaded. It happens from time to time. But if the problem persists, check your internet connection and make sure your poodll filter settings for Red5 are ok. Check the settings and connectivity at to see a reference site.

Hi Justin, thanks for the answer! You are right, i can't get a connection to the red5 server. I don't know what's happening. Can I, in some way, use another video server to make the video records? Maybe using a local repository or something like that, or installing in my local another kind of video server. Can you help me with that?

Installing a local version of Red5+PoodLL is a good option, if you need to do that. But it requires a fair amount of skill to set up, and it is really for people working with strict privacy requirements, or who need greater speed and reliability than the server.

In your situation I think you may have other options to check on first. Can you record with the server ? Is your moodle accessible from other machines on the network? Have you muddled with the settings on the poodll filter settings page? (check for working settings)

I tried to record with the server and occured the same problem. I want to install this plugin in order to use in the company's corporative school. We have a lot of courses in our school, and this plugin would be great! It is a goverment company, maybe it's firewall is blocking que server or something like that.

My moodle is not accessible from other machines on my network. It is a local instalation, in order to make some tests. We work with Moodle 1.9 and i installed the Moodle 2.7 in my machine to test some plugins. Oh, I forgot to tell that we use ubuntu 14.02.

Could you help me (if it's not "asking too much") with the local installation of red5 + poodll?

I am very interested in this plugin.
I am currently using version 2.9. How would the plugin work if I installed it?

The documentation for installing it is on this page. ie
Make sure you have the PoodLL filter installed too. I have not tested on Moodle 2.9 yet, but not expecting any problems.

This is a fantastic plugin. I'm having some trouble with the audio recorder though. I've changed the settings around in a variety of ways but the longest I've managed to get it to record something is 20 seconds. Any suggestions? The video recorder seems to work perfectly and can record long clips with audio as well so it's a bit strange.

Also, I can confirm that it works on 2.9.

Ah ... this sounds very much like you have "suhosin" running on the server. Suhosin is a PHP extension that for security reasons truncates long post submissions. The MP3 recorder, "posts" submissions to the server, and the other recorders do not. (Actually this will change soon ... good) . For now the best thing is to either disable suhosin, or configure it to allow bigger uploads. See this forum post:

    Dear Justin,
I had tested the module "poodll anywhere" ,it's very good for me.
But I think it will be better if you add the function of screen snapshot (or screen recording).
The screen snapshot maybe comprises full screen and selected portion.
Could you add a new function for the module "poodll anywhere" ?
Thank you very much for your selfless sharing.

Has anyone else had trouble using the audio on this plug-in with Moodle version 2.8.9 and Flash Player 19? It was working great until we did a minor Moodle upgrade. To be honest, I'm not sure if the problem was caused by the Moodle update or Flash Player update.
