BCU Theme

This theme is no longer being actively developed, please see the forked Adaptable Theme instead.

This bootstrap based theme is in use on a large site and has been thoroughly tested using pretty well every possible permutation of a Moodle course including several third party course formats. It is customisable through admin settings and should serve you well!

Cool features: (at least we think so)

  • Toggle to hide show blocks in one click
  • Toggle to switch between fixed and full width
  • Support for bootstrap elements (Toggle, Modal, see our Bootstrap Elements Plugin Here )
  • Choice of two tiled renderers for My Courses on front page, one static and one with overlay

Home Page:

  • Jquery slider
  • Marketing spots on front page (three or four should render well)
  • 2 x info boxes on front page
  • My Courses rendered as "tiles" making better use of space
  • Four configurable blocks in theme footer (display sitewide)

Navigation:

Top navbar includes:

  • Messages icon showing alerts of unread messages + dropdown of users sending messages
  • Dropdown with users profile related links

Secondary navbar includes:

  • links to home, my home, events
  • My Courses drop down list of enrolled courses the order of which is controlled by My Home settings. Students can customise order of this navigation list in My Home. Drag courses to re-order them in My Home and the same order will be reflected in the drop down navigation
  • This Course drop down list provides consistent course navigation to activities (replicates activities block), participants and grades
  • Ability to add a "help" link into navigation for help pages

Other Features:

  • Ability to display a site wide message across the top of the site to notify of downtime or similar
  • Truncate course / category names in breadcrumbs, if you have long names and a deep category structure this will come in quite handy! (we plan to apply expanding breadcrumbs on mousever as seen in Essential theme)
  • Uses Font Awesome so icons can easily changed

Admin Settings: highly customisable with many settings:

  • Color pickers to alter look of theme
  • File uploader for slider images
  • File uploader for Logo
  • Field for stats tracking code (Piwik, Analytics etc)

Credits:

We are continually improving the features in this theme and would appreciate feedback and suggestions you may have and If we like them we will integrate and update the version here.

If you find any problems please check the issue tracker, hopefully you will find we already have it on our list.

Future Plans: we will be adding more navigation items into the theme (configurable) with the aim of reaching a point where we can disable the administration and navigaion blocks for students giving a simplified more consistent way of navigating courses which is less dependant on the random availability and placement of blocks.

    Hi again,

I just upgraded to version 1.3 (should have done this before my previous comment) and this is fixed for me. Thank you very much.

    Good morning -

We're using the BCU theme on a Moodle site we have in development. We just upgraded to Moodle 2.9, and have also upgraded to version 1.3 of the theme - now I'm noting that when accessing the site on a phone or tablet, both the mobile menu and the user dropdown are not opening when tapped. I was searching this issue last night and saw that it's been reported elsewhere as well over the couple of days (here - https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=313903, and here - https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=276325#p1256369). Any ideas on how to correct this? Thanks for your work - this is an awesome theme! smile

    Hi Laurie,

Could you please reply at the end of this thread (where this issue has also been reported):

    https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=276325

    To tell us:

    1) Which device / browser you see this on
    2) Whether clicking exactly on the icons (rather than text in links) makes any difference to you?

    Hi guys,

Can't find a way to remove these blocks from the default student layouts. Private Files, Calendar, Upcoming Events.

Do I have to edit them out directly from the config.php? Shouldn't they appear under the Administration > Appearance > Default Dashboard Page as well?

    Hi Scott,

Blocks are nothing to do with the theme, they are set up in the course. If you add blocks to the front page of moodle an administator can make them appear sitewide for different roles. If you switched themes the blocks would still be there.

If I have misinterpreted your issue could you provide a screen shot?

    Hi,
I just installed the theme and see that the links to Dashboard and to Home both open the Dasboard page. If I want to go to the site home I have to use the site home link in the navigation block. I checked the header settings and in the "Customize the navigation bar" they seem to be correctly set. (theme_bcu|enablehome and theme_bcu|enablemyhome).
Moreover, in this theme I can't find any link to the "preferences" page. It should be in the "Customize the user navigation drop down" in the header settings, as it is normally on other themes. Is there another way to add it to the user navigation drop down?
    I am using Moodle 2.9.

    Hi A.A.

Thanks for trying our theme, I hope you stick with it, its really useful to get this kind of feedback smile

Do you have your site set to use "my home" or dashboard as the default homepage when users log in?

I think we will need to add preferences for 2.9, we have some other links we want to add there too, We will try and add those this week.

    Hi Jez H,
actually if I change the setting to use "Site" instead of "Dashboard" as the default page when users log in, the "Home" link in the navigation bar now takes me to the frontpage. Thanks.
A minor problem that I have faced is that I cannot see the "Picture 1 caption" that I write in the frontpage slider setting, (!?) although I can see the other Pictures captions. The semi transparent bar of Picture 1 caption is almost half the height of the other semitransparent bars of Picture 2, 3, 4 and 5 captions.
I solved the problem deleting all the pictures' captions!
I am waiting for your improvements to the theme. I really like it.

    Hi Jez H,
I spot another problem. When I describe an activity like a SCORM package or a data base activity, I use to insert an image within the description that appears on the course page.
Then, when I use the menu "This course" to show only a type of activity, the images on data base activities' description disappear (a square with a broken link icon is showed), but the same image, used in the description of a SCORM package appears normally(!?). So it happens only with data base descriptions that use an image within the description.
Another feature that could be useful to insert in the theme (perhaps choosing it from the settings) is to mark the current topic of a course with a background color. I have already seen it with almost all of the other themes that I used in moodle.

    Hi Jez H,
before you publish a new release this week (as you said) just to know I have seen these other two things.
In the previous comment I said that the problem to show images in the description of an activity selected from the menu "This course" happens only with data base description. Actually it happens also with the resources description.
One more thing. In the front page if I choose to show a list of categories and courses, it shows the list of categories, but courses are presented only with white boxes below them without courses' names.

    Hi A.A.,

Thanks for your feedback / suggestions but I am afraid this comments section is not a good place for such things.
Could you please post in the discussion forum instead:

    https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=276325

If you find bugs or have other problems it would be better if you could raise an issue in our tracker (look for "create issue" in top right hand corner):

    https://bitbucket.org/jezh/moodle-theme_bcu/issues?status=new&status=open

Screen shots are worth a thousand words and screen recordings better still which you can do with the free version of this:

    http://screencast-o-matic.com/

If you want to test our latest version at any point to see if something has been resolved you can download it here:

    https://bitbucket.org/jezh/moodle-theme_bcu/get/master.zip

If there are specific things that are still not fixed could you add them one at a time in our tracker please?

I know this will create more work for you but I am not clear on the issues from your comments above, and we really need to be able to look at each item on its own.

Regards the white boxes, are you using "combo list" on the front page? If so there is a known issue with that, I am afraid the only advice I can offer there is NOT to use combo but show "my courses" or the list of courses above and the category listing below, which you can do from front page settings in Moodle.

Using Moodle 2.9. Maybe I've misconfigured something in the setup, but the "Moodle Docs for this page" links no longer appear at the bottom of my pages. When I switch the theme, the usual footer information appears. What am I missing? Love the theme otherwise!
