BCU Theme

This theme is no longer being actively developed, please see the forked Adaptable Theme instead.

This bootstrap based theme is in use on a large site and has been thoroughly tested using pretty well every possible permutation of a Moodle course including several third party course formats. It is customisable through admin settings and should serve you well!

Cool features: (at least we think so)

  • Toggle to hide show blocks in one click
  • Toggle to switch between fixed and full width
  • Support for bootstrap elements (Toggle, Modal, see our Bootstrap Elements Plugin Here )
  • Choice of two tiled renderers for My Courses on front page, one static and one with overlay

Home Page:

  • Jquery slider
  • Marketing spots on front page (three or four should render well)
  • 2 x info boxes on front page
  • My Courses rendered as "tiles" making better use of space
  • Four configurable blocks in theme footer (display sitewide)

Navigation:

Top navbar includes:

  • Messages icon showing alerts of unread messages + dropdown of users sending messages
  • Dropdown with users profile related links

Secondary navbar includes:

  • links to home, my home, events
  • My Courses drop down list of enrolled courses the order of which is controlled by My Home settings. Students can customise order of this navigation list in My Home. Drag courses to re-order them in My Home and the same order will be reflected in the drop down navigation
  • This Course drop down list provides consistent course navigation to activities (replicates activities block), participants and grades
  • Ability to add a "help" link into navigation for help pages

Other Features:

  • Ability to display a site wide message across the top of the site to notify of downtime or similar
  • Truncate course / category names in breadcrumbs, if you have long names and a deep category structure this will come in quite handy! (we plan to apply expanding breadcrumbs on mousever as seen in Essential theme)
  • Uses Font Awesome so icons can easily changed

Admin Settings: highly customisable with many settings:

  • Color pickers to alter look of theme
  • File uploader for slider images
  • File uploader for Logo
  • Field for stats tracking code (Piwik, Analytics etc)

Credits:

We are continually improving the features in this theme and would appreciate feedback and suggestions you may have and If we like them we will integrate and update the version here.

If you find any problems please check the issue tracker, hopefully you will find we already have it on our list.

Future Plans: we will be adding more navigation items into the theme (configurable) with the aim of reaching a point where we can disable the administration and navigaion blocks for students giving a simplified more consistent way of navigating courses which is less dependant on the random availability and placement of blocks.

@Glenn, I think the latest version on our GIT repo should have the moodledocs fix in it

@Jayapramod You would need to edit the javscript for that which I would not recommend, 444 x 200 is an odd size. If you can produce slider images 1140 x 300 they will work well

Very nice for the language no problem.

First congratulate you for the excellent theme, I am using all my personal work platforms.

Secondly, I am having problems with the slides. or to be exact with "Frontpage Slider" because when upload images of different resolutions giants I always go on the screen. I want to lower the resolution or the size of the box where cruise slides. www.colegiolapresentaciongirardot.org is my place and I have not podidoo change this.

2.6 moodle use remain attentive to the situation

Thanks for your attention and good heart.

    Hi,

    Just a quick two question.

    1. This theme requires cdn1.bcu.ac.uk up. Last day we haven't reach that site. As a result of this our moodle site didn't work. After tha i looked site and download BCU Toolkit. How can i install it? Just unzip from theme folder? And also which code must i remove from existing linked to uk site?

    2. I customized BCU theme. What will happen my customization if i upgrade BCU theme to the upper version?

    Thanks

    Hi Idiye,

I think you have pulled the wrong version down from our GIT repository, can you try this download instead please:

    @Juan,

Our slider images are 1140 x 300 they will work well, but if you go full screen on a large monitor they do look big.

It is possible to edit the jquery to alter the size but I would not recommend it as any future theme updates you make will overwrite your changes (unless you maintain changes in your own GIT).

A few people have asked about this now, I guess it would make sense if this were configurable, it maybe something we go back and look at as we have the same issue and in fact disable the slider on our homepage most of the time for this reason (only using it to notify of changes, events or perhaps "welcome" at the start of the academic year, so being able to switch between different sized sliders would be useful.

In the mean time your best bet is to stick with 1140 x 300.

I really like the ability to add an image to a course description, and this shows up on the front page list of courses - but can someone tell me what the optimum ratio is for this image?

I don't know if this is useful to anyone but I've seen a few comments about the size of the slider image. I've managed to scale down the picture size by changing the width in the slider.css file. If you reduce the % it does not affect the image ratio (so far as I can tell). Hope this is helpful.

Sorry one more point, if you want the picture to remain in the centre you have to add margin: auto; after the width

Can anyone inform me how to change the font? My whole site is in Arial at the moment and I'd prefer tahoma

I am having an issue in that some menu links are showing with the colour set in the theme whilst others are not. For instance under Site Administration Notifications and Registration show as expected(#1E9CFA) whilst Advanced Features shows as #fff. This is happening throughout the menu

Sorry but I have an issue in that the the Link Colour is not accepting the setting in the theme. I am using Moodle 2.8.7.
