The Aardvark project started in 2008 after a focus group with students led the development of our somewhat basic and neglected installation of Moodle into a (at the time) modern and engaging platform. The idea was to drive student use by creating a colourful, MySpace-inspired, student intranet as the front-end, with the functionality of a VLE behind it. Pressure from those students would then ultimately drive adoption by tutors.

Over the years, Aardvark has been an exciting and arguably inspiring project, started at Newbury College, but benefiting from the contributions and expertise of many other developers. It was the first open-source Moodle theme to include a drop-down navigation menu, a concept that would eventually become a core element of Moodle theme engine, and at its peak was installed on over 5,000 Moodle installations around the world.

Development of Aardvark slowed down a few years ago as many of its advantages were adopted as features in the core theme engine of Moodle and a lack of development time meant that I was no longer able to keep up with the changes required to make the theme compatible with the latest releases. Unfortunately I have had to make the decision to cease development of Aardvark to focus on other commitments.

Aardvark has been an incredible project to work on, and I have learnt a huge amount about PHP and CSS along the way and I would like to thank everyone who has contacted me over the years with their kind comments. Special thanks to Mary L Evans, Patrick Malley and all of the other contributors and supporters who have been part of this journey.

New version uploaded - please note that the Aardvark logo setting has been depreciated in favour of the core logo settings. Some other 3.2 specific features have also been integrated so it's marked as 3.2 only.

    Hello, I have 2 requests:

1.- website url, can open a new page
2.- general alert, have a button to close the alert

For the moment I solve it by placing the following text in its respective field:

    1.- http://www.link.com "target =" _ blank "
    2.- <button type = "button" class = "close" date-dismiss = "alert"> & times; </ button> alert text

    Sorry for the translation

Aadvark doesn't actually work under the latest Moodle 3.0 release.

After being annoyed for quite some time about the plugin updater notifying me about a new Aadvark version, despite said version not installing properly due to required Moodle version (Aadvark 3.1 requires 2016052300 while my Moodle 3.0 install is version 2015111609.00), I decided to download Aadvark 3.1 (2016081900) myself, modify version.php inside the zip, repack, uninstall my current Aadvark (version 2015110900) then upgrade with the repacked zip...

Result: After setting theme to Aadvark with theme selector, my Moodle site is completely blank, except for the top bar (which is in a light grey color, and the top right dropdown menu doesn't actually work)

Luckily I had backed up the virtual machine so I simply rolled back, but it would be best to not to advertise Aadvark 3.1 as being supported on Moodle 3.0, since it really isn't.

    Hi Shaun, and Mary,
Love the theme, but have just upgraded one of our sites from 3.1.1 (Aardvark 3.1) to 3.2.2+ (upgrading Aardvark to 3.2) and the Aardvark theme appears broken. When we click to open a Lesson, we get the message "Exception - Call to a member function get() on null" on a white screen, and no Moodle menus (have to click back arrow to get back). The error disappears when we change to the Boost theme. Any thoughts on this? Is it a bug? Thanks for your work on the theme.

Rafael Mattos - Sounds like the problem was caused by you downloading and modifying the Aardvark theme. Each version has certain dependencies tied to the current version we are running here, so I try to set that as the minimum. It sounds like your install couldn't meet those dependencies and if you force it to install then you will get problems. Aardvark 3.1 is designed to work with Moodle 3.1, etc.

Unfortunately I am the only developer on this theme (although I occasionally receive contributions) and I only have a very small amount of time to work on it. The work I do is primarily to benefit the students here but I like to share so that others can potentially make use of what I do.

Like any open source project, I would always recommend installing on a development server first and/or taking a backup of your installation. If you want a much more 'stable' theme with more developers working on it, then I would recommend using the built-in ones.

Daniel Reyes - I'm sorry I do not have access to a server with Moodle 2.5 on it. Maybe someone else can help.

Rick W - Hi Rick, I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with the lesson module however I have just created one on our Moodle 3.2.2+ dev site with (Aarvark 3.2) and it doesn't seem to have any problems. Try uninstalling Aarvark and reinstalling it to see if that helps.

Sorry I can't be much more help, but it is working just fine here. I'm happy to take a look if email me with access to your site and point me in direction of the temperamental activity.
