The Aardvark project started in 2008 after a focus group with students led the development of our somewhat basic and neglected installation of Moodle into a (at the time) modern and engaging platform. The idea was to drive student use by creating a colourful, MySpace-inspired, student intranet as the front-end, with the functionality of a VLE behind it. Pressure from those students would then ultimately drive adoption by tutors.

Over the years, Aardvark has been an exciting and arguably inspiring project, started at Newbury College, but benefiting from the contributions and expertise of many other developers. It was the first open-source Moodle theme to include a drop-down navigation menu, a concept that would eventually become a core element of Moodle theme engine, and at its peak was installed on over 5,000 Moodle installations around the world.

Development of Aardvark slowed down a few years ago as many of its advantages were adopted as features in the core theme engine of Moodle and a lack of development time meant that I was no longer able to keep up with the changes required to make the theme compatible with the latest releases. Unfortunately I have had to make the decision to cease development of Aardvark to focus on other commitments.

Aardvark has been an incredible project to work on, and I have learnt a huge amount about PHP and CSS along the way and I would like to thank everyone who has contacted me over the years with their kind comments. Special thanks to Mary L Evans, Patrick Malley and all of the other contributors and supporters who have been part of this journey.

Hi, I have a 2.7 site with Aardvark and I love the theme. In some computers running IE 8 the background shows as a bright orange color when on all other systems its set as a faint gray. I can't figure this out from any of the settings. Sorry I have no programming experience and am new to moodle.
    My site is at www.igrtonline.com

Hi could someone please point me in the right direction for centering the Aarvark theme to disable the main stage from expanding full screen?

    Hi Shaun,

With my latest Aardvark theme deployment I had a problem that the fixed header was relative big (160 pixel) and when using hash tag links in the courses the content of the anchors was covered by the header. I needed to offset the anchors for fix this.
After digging the net I have found I have found a solution that can be read here: http://eduroll.eu/?p=137 Hope you can use this in your next build.

    Cheers,
    Gabor

Sorry for not being around as much. I will hopefully get some time to look at Aardvark again during the summer holidays so please if anyone has any suggested edits, please let me know. I really do want to try and get this project on to GIT but have terrible trouble with the firewall here making it pretty much impossible.

I'm running Aardvark 2.6.4 on Moodle 2.6.5+. Internet Explorer 9 users are experiencing an issue where info is not getting populated after clicking the link icon in html editor. For example, the window title is {#advlink_dig.title} and tab {#advlink_dlg.general_tab}. Other browsers we use seem to be fine. Would upgrading Aardvark theme help? Thanks!

Have you tried it with other themes? Also have you checked if IE is running in compatability mode? IE by default uses compatability mode to run intranet sites, but compatability mode doesn't work well with Moodle. We had issues from Moodle 2.5 and up because of IE forcing compatability mode on.

check with another theme and if it's still a problem then check compatability mode, and if it's still a problem then... well I'm afraid you may have to call time on IE9

I haven't tried other themes, but there's a good chance it is in compatibility mode because we had to force compatibility mode via group policy for the hospital due to other programs requiring it. Many users require IE9 due to other programs. Maybe we can figure out a way to enforce compatibility mode only for IE10 and greater, but I'm not sure how to do that. This is most likely the issue then, because I think it started happening about the time we put that into place. The users that use Moodle editor the most could potentially be upgraded to IE11 which doesn't have the issue since they don't require the same programs as clinical personnel... Would other themes have the same issue do you think? Browser compatibility continues to be a headache for developers and IT support...

I would guess that the issue would be the same on another theme as Aardvark doesn't actually affect the HTML editor.

    Hi Nathan
Try using Afterburner and see if that has the same problem?
You can test this yourself secretly if you set Site Administration > Appearance > Themes > Theme settings
    "Allow theme change in URL"
Follow the information given below that setting.
Basically all that does is allows you to add
    ?theme=afterburner
or any other theme name just after your site URL for example
    http://www.citycollage.edu/?theme=afterburner

Changing the theme to afterburner doesn't affect it. What is weird is that our backup server doesn't have an issue, and it is basically a copy of the production server. We had some issues with data loss from the moodledata folder, but I don't think that would affect this(?). Also, after installing Chrome, a user said the issue was resolved, but after uninstalling Chrome, they say it is again a problem, even though they are using IE11. I haven't confirmed 100% that the Chrome uninstall triggered the return of the issue; I can hardly think that would affect IE, and can't verify until Monday. Very strange.

I reinstalled TinyMCE and still no luck. I will move this discussion to the main forum since it isn't an Aardvark issue. https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=315014
