Filters: Multi-Embed Filter

Maintained by I Teach With MoodleFrederic Nevers
Moodle filter to facilitate embedding of third-party content using simple copy/paste of URLs (e.g. Google Docs, YouTube, ThingLink, Quizlet, Padlet, etc.). 3 new services recently added -> now supports 31 services!
849 sites
52 fans
Current versions available: 3

The Moodle Multi-Embed filter automatically turns URLs from supported services into embedded content, without any user input. By using the Moodle Multi-Embed filter, Moodle users (e.g. teachers) do not need to know how to 'embed' objects from other sites, they only need to know how to copy/paste a URL into their Moodle content, using the standard Moodle editor.

Now supports 31 online services! Responsive content (automatically adjusts to screen size), GDPR compliant. Lazyloading support (pages load fast)

Image description of the 'Multi-Embed Moodle filter'

Please make sure that you have enabled the 'Convert URLs into links' filter, and placed it above the Multi-Embed filter, as shown below. This setting can be found at Site administration > Plugins > Filters > Manage filters. Ensure both filters are set to 'Content and Headings'

Please ensure that the 'Converts URLs into links and images' filter settings are set to filter all types of content at Site administration > Plugins > Filters > Convert URLs into links and images as shown below

Depending on your Moodle installation, you may also need to do the following

  • In Site administration > Security > Site policies, set 'Allow EMBED and OBJECT tags' to 'Yes'

@DPM Nederland I have just released a new version of the plugin, which now supports responsive embedding. Only a few services do not support responsive content (nothing I can do about it)

@Chris Hall-Franzkowiak Trello has been added.

@Joe I have Office365 working on my test site, but I need more sample URLs, to make sure I have the code working correctly. Can you please send me some examples?

@Mohammad Prezi is changing the way they are doing things. The newer presentations don't seem to be embeddable. I'll take a look, but it looks like I might need to deprecate Prezi

@Nabil I will look into it. I might need help with the testing.

Hello, first of all I'd like to thank you for your work. This plugin looks quite amazing. I'm wondering if it might be possible to ad a feature, which helps to fulfill more european GDPR restrictions. I mean a 2-click-solution when external content (like for example youtube) is embedded. The user should first actively accept, that he/she is leaving moodle, before external content is loaded. Before that, no external content should be loaded. As i guess there is more people arround who need that feature, especially in europe, it might be great if you could include that. Thanks in advance and best wishes, Benedikt

@Benedikt Glad to hear you find the plugin useful. I will look into your request. Technically, I think it is possible but I need to think about how to implement it. I'll see if I can add it to the next release.

    Hi Frederic,

Thanks for this great plugin, I think it should be incoporated into core Moodle! I use it primarily to embed Vimeo videos. While the plugin works very well in a browser, the videos are not showing in the Moodle Mobile app; there is a blank space where the video should be. If I embed the Vimeo videos with iframes they show up properly in the app.

I have filed a bug report in the tracker.
    Thanks again

Hi there, we love this extension, however finding that when we add a google slides URL to a Moodle 3.9 Assignment, the filter doesn't pick it up (same link works fine elsewhere). Any ideas?

Allow me to answer my own question. On the Multi-Embed filter settings page, simply remove assignment view from the "Blacklist". smile Still my favorite filter!

    Hi @Derek,

Thank you - I will look into it.

@Doug, thank you for your question, and answer! Glad you found out what was wrong. Thanks for the kind words.

Agree with everyone--this truly is an amazing filter!!! Teachers are working around the clock especially during the pandemic to support their students--anything that makes it easier for them to build robust courses and easily embed quality content is a life saver!!! I also love the fact that it makes it easy for students to share, post, and turn in assignments easily!! Thank you Fred for sharing your amazing work with the Moodle community!!!

@Joe really glad you find the filter useful. I now work at a school that offers Microsoft 365, so I should be able to add support in the next release

Hi Fred: Congrats on the new job--they are lucky to have you onboard! Adding on Multi-Filter embed of Office365 would be amazing--that would be great for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more importantly OneNote for teachers and students since the OneNote ClassNotebook add-in gives teachers a lot of flexibility and convenience currently not offered by any other tool! OneNote ClassNotebook allows teachers to easily distribute sections and pages of materials to students, and as soon as students ink it automatically syncs and submits there work in an organized fashion not currently available with other tools! Coupled with your filter and leveraging Moodle, this would be a dangerous tool to unleash during this crazy time of remote learning!!!!
