Maintained by I Teach With MoodleFrederic Nevers
Moodle filter to facilitate embedding of third-party content using simple copy/paste of URLs (e.g. Google Docs, YouTube, ThingLink, Quizlet, Padlet, etc.). 3 new services recently added -> now supports 31 services!
Latest release:
956 sites
263 downloads
59 fans
Current versions available: 3

Description

The Moodle Multi-Embed filter automatically turns URLs from supported services into embedded content, without any user input. By using the Moodle Multi-Embed filter, Moodle users (e.g. teachers) do not need to know how to 'embed' objects from other sites, they only need to know how to copy/paste a URL into their Moodle content, using the standard Moodle editor.

Now supports 31 online services! Responsive content (automatically adjusts to screen size), GDPR compliant. Lazyloading support (pages load fast)

Pre-requisites

Please make sure that you have enabled the 'Convert URLs into links' filter, and placed it above the Multi-Embed filter, as shown below. This setting can be found at Site administration > Plugins > Filters > Manage filters. Ensure both filters are set to 'Content and Headings'

Please ensure that the 'Converts URLs into links and images' filter settings are set to filter all types of content at Site administration > Plugins > Filters > Convert URLs into links and images as shown below

Depending on your Moodle installation, you may also need to do the following

  • In Site administration > Security > Site policies, set 'Allow EMBED and OBJECT tags' to 'Yes'

Hi there, we love this extension, however finding that when we add a google slides URL to a Moodle 3.9 Assignment, the filter doesn't pick it up (same link works fine elsewhere). Any ideas?

Allow me to answer my own question. On the Multi-Embed filter settings page, simply remove assignment view from the "Blacklist". smile Still my favorite filter!

    Hi @Derek,

Thank you - I will look into it.

@Doug, thank you for your question, and answer! Glad you found out what was wrong. Thanks for the kind words.

    Cheers,
    Fred

Agree with everyone--this truly is an amazing filter!!! Teachers are working around the clock especially during the pandemic to support their students--anything that makes it easier for them to build robust courses and easily embed quality content is a life saver!!! I also love the fact that it makes it easy for students to share, post, and turn in assignments easily!! Thank you Fred for sharing your amazing work with the Moodle community!!!

    Cheers,

    --Joe 😀

@Karl thanks for the kind feedback. Yes, it fully supports 3.9. I have tested it, but have not yet had a chance to upload a new version to the database.
    Cheers,
    Fred

@Joe really glad you find the filter useful. I now work at a school that offers Microsoft 365, so I should be able to add support in the next release
    Cheers,
    Fred

Hi Fred: Congrats on the new job--they are lucky to have you onboard! Adding on Multi-Filter embed of Office365 would be amazing--that would be great for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more importantly OneNote for teachers and students since the OneNote ClassNotebook add-in gives teachers a lot of flexibility and convenience currently not offered by any other tool! OneNote ClassNotebook allows teachers to easily distribute sections and pages of materials to students, and as soon as students ink it automatically syncs and submits there work in an organized fashion not currently available with other tools! Coupled with your filter and leveraging Moodle, this would be a dangerous tool to unleash during this crazy time of remote learning!!!!

    Hey Fred,
First a big thank you - the filter rocks! We just upgraded to Moodle 3.10 and noticed something curious that seems to be Multi-Embed Filter (MEF) related - when inserting a Youtube url into a page, with the MEF on, the page will open in a pop-out, easily embed and play the YouTube video, but when you close the popout while the video is playing, the video will continue to play as if the page was still open. This doesn't happen if you make the YouTube url a link before saving the page however. It is not a huge workaround but if there is an easy fix then that would be great smile Cheers!

Hi @Brock, thank you for reporting the issue. I have not yet had time to test the plugin against Moodle 3.10 - that's on my TODO for this weekend. Day job keeps getting in the way! Cheers, Fred

    Hi Fred,
Could you be able to add loom videos?
It's a great tool for creating screen recordings and is free for teachers and students.

    Hi Fred,

Thank you for this fantastic filter--a huge help especially during COVID and remote learning!

Question: any chance you will be updating your plugin to 3.9 over the summer?

Thanks again for sharing your great work with the Moodle community!
  • Fri, Jun 25, 2021, 1:40 AM
Frederic, I don't understand how your plugin isn't *VASTLY MORE RECOGNIZED.* It's exactly what actual teachers need to build interactive courses. The education specific services you've chosen to support like Canva, Desmos, etc, make all the difference. Are you intending to maintain this plugin for the Moodle 4 update?
  • Mon, Jul 5, 2021, 10:02 PM
Agree! This filter ROCKS! Makes it super easy for students and teachers to automatically embed content--as simple as copy and pasting a link!

Also was wondering if you might have time to update your plugin for 3.9 since it is a LTS version (long term support)?

Your filter should be part of the Moodle core--thank you again for sharing your great work with the Moodle community!

Hi @Eric and @Joseph, thank you for the kind words - glad you find the plugin useful. The nature and scope of my job have changed quite a bit in August 2020, and I must admit that I struggle to find time to keep the plugin updated. I will see if I can do it this summer. Hopefully it shouldn't be too much work. Fingers crossed. @Lance, I will see what I can do.
    Cheers,
    Fred
