GISMO is a graphical interactive monitoring tool that provides useful visualization of students' activities in online courses to instructors. With GISMO instructors can examine various aspects of distance students, such as the attendance to courses, reading of materials, submission of assignments. Users of the popular learning management system Moodle may benefit from GISMO for their teaching activities. With respect to the standard reports provided by Moodle (which basically allow teachers to see if an individual student has viewed a specific resource or participated on a specific activity on a specific day), GISMO provides comprehensive visualizations that gives an overview of the whole class, not only a specific student or a particular resource. With GISMO, instructors can perform analysis of the whole class, and may have a "clear picture" of what the class is doing, or has done in a period in the past.

    Hello,
The only resources that are counted towards student progress on our site are SCORM packages. Does GISMO not track the completion status of SCORM packages?

I installed the 2.8 version and can't get it to work. The Gismo screen launches with a list of students and activities but nothing more. All I get is "Cannot proceed with the analysis because there isn't any data to work on!". I know that there is lots of data in the course. Any thoughts?

    hello howard,
    did you run the exporter?

Gismo needs to perform some computation on regular basis. The purpose of this
computation is to extract data from logs and derive aggregated information.

This computation is done by a scheduled task, by default it runs at 2am (server time)
but can be changed in Site Administration -> Server -> Scheduled tasks -> GIMSO data exporter task

When you install Gismo block and you don't want to wait
the next day to see the result, you can lunch this script manually (ONLY FROM CLI):

    php blocks/gismo/lib/gismo/server_side/export_data.php?password=yourpassword

    Hi Jose,
not sure what you are asking. Are you wanting to know how to get the data to populate in the block? If so make sure you have the block added to a course....then wait till the overnight scheduled task runs then the data should be available. If you are using Moodle 2.7 then you can change the time that the Gismo data exporter task will run under Site Administration>>Server>>Scheduled Tasks>>Gismo data exporter task.

    Hi Erika,
we also are running Moodle 2.7 and get "No Data" for almost all assignments. We have this problem with two different Moodle installations. In one course we have 40 student submissions in 3 different assignments but we get only one student showing as having submitted in Gismo into just one assignment. All other courses show "No Data". There must be something wrong with the data collection but I don't know what. I could narrow down the one submission in the logs and the only difference I could see was the teacher had attempted to grade the assignment for that one student. I went to my other install and graded a student...reran the scheduled task and the assignment then showed in Gismo after being graded when previously it had shown "No Data" for assignments. Could you check to see if the same behaviour shows in your system?

    Hi Christian,
I did some more testing and there seems to be a need for a grade value in our server before the assignment activity gets exported into Gismo. Is that the expected outcome?
Could an submitted but ungraded assignment be shown with a grade value of 0 maybe? I think people use this block to track student participation and it would be good to see if the students have submitted assignments at any time- not just once the assignments have been graded.
