AJAX Marking Block

Blocks ::: block_ajax_marking
Maintained by Picture of Matt Gibson relaxing in the AlpsMatt Gibson
Shows a teacher all of the unmarked work which has been submitted by their students across all of the courses they teach in. It's most useful when placed on the front page, and it allows the work to be viewed and graded through a pop-up interface, which then updates the block once the work is marked.

Please note: This plugin is no longer supported for newer versions of Moodle, and I'm afraid I don't have the time to give it the full rewrite that it really needs. Sorry sad

The aim of this block is to avoid having to search through each of your courses to find out whether there is anything that needs marking.

When placed on the front page, it shows teachers how many pieces of work need to be attended to, broken down by course, or by cohort. The list then expands when clicked to show individual modules and students. When you click on a student, a pop-up opens, allowing the work to be marked and saved, then the block updates itself to show one less item in need of attention.

The block has been thoroughly tested on a copy of a large university database with >50,000 users and has been optimised so that it doesn't impact on DB performance at all.

Current status is that the development is paused (bug fixes only) whilst I work on other urgent projects. Once the Moodle logging 2.0 proposal in core is built and released, there will need to be a complete rewrite to make it maintainable for the future, but that is some way off.

If you want to stay current, follow @AJAX_Marking on twitter, which has general information about new features etc.

I currntly can't upload files to moodle.org due to some new security thingy preventing code files from going through the filemanager. There's a new beta (2.1.5b7) that sorts out issues on IE7 and allows other blocks to display correctly again. Forum discussion with link to download is here : http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=200939

2.2 docs updated to reflect the changes in 2.1.5b7

I added a Moodle Tracker report #32567 (http://goo.gl/Paewd) for another Ajax error on version 2.1.5b7. Response files list does not load.

The grading window does not include a "Revert to Draft" button (as seen in the Assignment grading dialog). I don't know if this is a result of the Javascript error or something different. In any case, I would really like to see the Revert to Draft button. I use it frequently.

Hi Jim. This seems to have regressed from the earlier fix. Just investigating now. Please add comments and specific versions of Moodle and database to the tracker.

Matt - is it possible to make the Marking block be hidden completely when a student (or anyone who is not a teacher in the course) visits the page? There are no assignments show for non-teachers, but I would prefer that they don't see the block at all.

Matt, this is one of the best blocks out there. I was totally excited to see the "Revert to Draft" feature added onto the block. However, as I have been using the "Revert to Draft" button I notice that the assignment is not actually reverted to draft. I can go in and look at the submissions and change it there. I figure that this is just one of those small bugs that will eventually be fixed in another version. Also, it would be great if in the comments section we could use the WYSIWYG editor. Again, these are not deal breakers. I love using your block every day. Keep up the good work!

Hi there, love the Marking Block. One issue (I do apologise if it's only a problem for us), is that if a teacher marks an assessment which is Not Yet Satisfactory, and selects "Save Changes", this closes the window, and the assessment can't be reverted back into Draft mode. The opposite is also true, if you click on "revert to draft' it does revert to draft, but it does not save any feedback you have entered or the grade.

The only way this works is if you mark the assessment NYS, and then navigate through your course, to that particular assessment, to revert it back into draft so that the student can resubmit.

Ideally, you would wan't to both, Save the comments/grade, and also have the ability to Revert back to Draft within the same window.

Oops - messages building up again. Google alerts has let me down! Thanks all for the feedback. Here are specific answers, which I will also send via direct message:

@Brian - This is the intended behaviour, so if you're finding it doesn't do this then it's broken. I did change some code around visibility recently, so maybe that's the issue. I'll take a look and see if I can reproduce it.

@최 병우 - If you'd like to see a Korean version, please fork the project on github, then translate the language strings in /lang/en/block_ajax_marking.php into korean, resave them to /lang/ko/block_ajax_marking.php and send me a pull request. Here's an example: https://github.com/mattgibson/moodle-block_ajax_marking/pull/1 More info here: http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Translation

@Phillip - What version are you using? I released a new version the day after your message, which I think fixes this. If stilla problem, please file a bug and I'll get right on it.

@Serge - I'll look into this. I thought I'd made 'revert to draft' save any feedback that had been added, which would definitely be the desired behaviour, as you suggest.

Just installed this on latest moodle 2.2+ and all I get is a message saying "Error: please contact your administrator" on a red background. Clicking on the settings icon (the gear) reveals the course list, which I can expand tree style to show the assignments with items to grade, but none of them are links and the tree doesn't expand further.

@Matt turn on developer debugging and you should get a more verbose error message. Send it to me and I can sort the problem out.

@Christina - That sounds like a normal part of the plugin install process. You should see a 'continue' button underneath, which will allow you to carry on. Please let me know if this is not the case.

Messages sent to you both privately.
