I will use GParted to expand the disk space, but it will require down time.
Until then, i need to delete things out and keep the auto backup turned off.
Is it ok to delete things in the temp folder, specifically:
temp/download - 160MB
?
all the files in there are dated 2012, a movie, an apple key, pdf and ppt documents

Why did an automatic backup run (send me the "[ERROR] Automated backup status" email and fill up the trashdir) when one was not scheduled?

yep they are.
i found when i "enabled" the auto backups, that a backup is run immediately (that is what uased up all CPU) i added another CPU and its ok now.
but the scheduled automated backup, ran on its own a couple nights ago causing the issue in the other thread i posted that you linked to!
