I know there are several blank admin pages threads but rather than post a note at the end of a long list I thought I'd just share how we solved our problem.
I was getting the blank admin page problem well documented on this site. We are running a Solaris (sparc) 8 SunOne 6 server. I checked and double checked perms, php.ini, config.php and everything looked OK. Eventually we did find a message in our error log that indicated that going to http://whatever/moodle/admin was resetting our admin thread
"child process admin thread is shutting down"

The answer was to increase the stacksize in magnus.conf from 131072 bytes to 262144 bytes.
