Assignment module and educational practice

We use Moodle for language teaching. For that purpose we use the assignment activity a lot. However Moodle do not exactly support the way we work.

What we do is that we ask the students to write a text. Then the teacher applies her feedback. For that we use a correction key. The correction key is implemented as a glossary with auto-link to the entries. That means the teacher will give an error e.g. an c2 mark. The student can click on c2 to get a pop up that explains that here is a declination error (same with other kinds of errors). The student is supposed to correct the essay according to the response and submit the assignment once again. Now the teacher gives the final feedback and perhaps grades the assignment.

That means that we use 4 steps: 2 submissions from students and 2 feedbacks from the teacher. For us it is highly wanted that the activity module should - perhaps as an option in the activity settings - support this procedure in a way that shows the progression steps to the participants, teachers as well as students. For the teachers this could be reflected in the 'Status' column on
Front page ► Course ► Assignments ► Current assignment ► Submissions

For the students it should be possible to choose to have an email when the teacher have responded to their submissions and/or to be notified about it on the course frontpage and on their mymoodle page.

We also would like the students to have two buttons on their editing page, a 'Save' and a 'Submit' button to allow them to work on drafts.

I know that this is not just a trivial wish and has to be thoroughly discussed.
What do you think, do you use a similar method/do you like this idea?
