Before logging in to our moodle site, there is a username and password box up in the top right of the header. Is there a way to remove this? I thought it was the login block but wherever I move the block and logout the username and password is still in the header.

If you are talking about 1 below, then it's in your theme header. You can remove it by editing your theme header.html file.
If you are talking about 2, then that's your login block. When you login it does go away, but just login as admin, then turn on editing and you will see it...click the X in the block header to remove it.

Turn on editing and select it from the blocks dropdown.
