For those thinking of low-cost, real-world implementations in schools, I can really recommend skolelinux. Installation is damn simple (asks 3 questions, and it's done).
It uses a thin client approach, so the existing (legacy, old, slow) computers are networked with one or more powerful machines to provide a great environment for web browsing, openoffice, etc.
