Migrating Moodle to a new server

Migrating Moodle to a new server

Hi all,

I'm trying to move Moodle from one web server to another, when I do this the restore tells me the XML is corrupt, so I've tried doing multiple backups along the way but to no avail.

I've also tried moving one course at a time, that seems to work but is very time consuming and doesn't move items such as news.

Can anybody point me to some directions on migrating a full version of Moodle from one server to another?

Thanks,

c.

have moved a small site by

installing moodle

copying the moodle folder - root and all from old box to new server

backing up old DB

restoring DB on new box

worked with a test site I setup

don't know if this will help

Christopher - I know that I've posted elsewhere on this but when I think of Moodle I envision the trinity (which is appropriate considering my profession wink) In any case, the Moodle trinity consists of your moodledata folder, you database backup, and the moodle code. I would restore your database on the new machine and then copy over the files from the moodledata folder. Once you get things setup in the config.php to use the restored database and point to the new site it should work just fine. No need to mess with xml stuff and those time consuming backups.
