Course enrollment "Yes" and "Date Range"

could somebody pls explain the effects of the following two course configurations.

1. course enrollable set to "YES" and start date set to X and end date set to Y
2. course enrollable set to "Date range" and start date set to X and end date set to Y

i.e. are the above two are identical?
