Moodle on a NAS ie DS207+

Hi,

I'm considering, as an alternative for my current w2k3 server, to use a NAS?

i.e. the Synology DS207+.

Looks the thing has everything needed to run Moodle?
Apache, PHP, MySQL etc.

I'm interested to learn if someone has any experience with the use of a NAS as a Moodle server?

Hans.

Hi Hans,

Mate a quick glance at the specs page (http://www.synology.com/enu/products/compare_spec.php) for that machine you mention, suggests you're not in luck: it comes in configurations with a 500Mhz processor and either 64MB or 128 MB of RAM. While it may be able to serve out some simple PHP, it's not going to be able to run Moodle. Check out Moodle's requirements in the installation guide for more info (http://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle#Requirements).

I imagine that there are a number of folk in the community with their moodledata files on NAS, though.

Hi Myles,

Think you right. But it whould be nice if it was possible?

Perhaps it's better to build a system myself. Based on a good, affordable Server-motherboard and put linux (Ubuntu?) on it.

Hans.
