OK, finally figured out a solution; I accessed my site through an FTP client, and manually deleted my user pic. Then I edited my profile from within Moodle, and it worked that way. Are user pix file names re-written as "f1.jpg" etc? That might explain with editing after deleting such a file worked, whereas simply trying to edit from within Moodle did not.
