I think it would be a great issue that attendance block allow teachers set attendance manually for traditional courses (non virtual).
We're using moodle for non-presencial courses and we would like that all our activities (including presencial) be supported by moodle.
Dimitry, Do you think this could be possible?
PD: Sorry for my english, my native language is spanish
I might be a little confused by your post.
We use moodle for face to face classes as well as on-line classes. We use the attendance block/module to take attendance in face-to-face classes. The instructor can do this at the beginning of class (if they have a computer with internet connection) or when they get back to their office after class.
Is there a reason you cannot do this? (perhaps roles or an installation issue?) or is this not what you want to do?
Perhaps more information would help.
You understood me very well, but the problem is: we haven't PCs in the classrooms
That does make it harder! To use this module, you will have to be able to log in and tick the attendance radio buttons. Certainly you can do that after class, but you do have to be able to access moodle. I guess you could have a person who did the attendance for all students, such as an attendance clerk. That would require double entry of the information--paper copies coming from teachers, and then someone opening every course and putting in the information. It sounds like a lot of work to me, so you would just have to decide whether or not it was worth it!
We have on-line and face-to-face courses (in classrooms without PCs), and I would like tracking both using moodle... Then, when we're going to see the status of a student, we could have got together grades and attendance of all (on and off line) courses that student took.
But I didn't find the way (maybe I should read more?) of an "attendance clerk" can do that: "someone opening every course and putting in the information" later
Please let me ask you, how could we do it?
Thanks a lot!!!!
You might be able to duplicate a role such as non-editing teacher and modify it for the attendance clerk.
I think you must know that current attendance module is very tied to the course. By that, I mean that you would not be able to look up attendance by student and automatically see how that student was doing across several courses.
I am actually in a very similar situation at the moment. I've been using the attendance module for some time now and love it. We, at my university, are currently planning to track student attendance records using the attendance module which means that I am going to (or I want to) create a course template for each teacher with a 'pre-populated' attendance module that corresponds to our academic calendar.
We plan to ask each teacher to either take attendance 'online' with a computer in their classes or record attendance on a piece of paper (we supply a standard form) and enter the records into the computer later that day or a minimum of once a week. (from the teachers lounge or from home)
The big problem for me right now is that I cannot 'import' an attendance activity meaning that, if I want to set things up for my institution, I will have to hand create each course (several hundred!) and then hand generate the attendance dates for each course!! I could ask teachers to do this but we have many teachers that are not yet that familiar with Moodle and it would surely set us up for lots of chaos.
I posted a message about not being able to 'import' the attendance activity here but haven't heard anything. Any idea what needs to be done to make this possible....anyone?
But... I didn't find the way to do the "manual attendance"...
I reviewed rol permissions, I gave extra-permissions to the non-editing teacher rol for perform that activity (see screen attached), I logged in like that rol, but I can't see how register attendance manually, I can't see any radiobutton anywhere... What is wrong? Thanks again.
As I said, I have not done much with any roles except the legacy roles. So I would not feel qualified to advise you.
First, am I correct in assuming that you have installed the Attendance package (block and module)? It is found here or from the Modules and Plugins page.
With Dimitry's attendance package installed you should be able to take attendance for a class. Unless you have also installed the 'auto attendance' option, taking attendance is always 'manual' meaning that a teacher, or someone, has to click on the attendance session for each day and then click on the correct item (present, late, absent etc.) for each student.
If you want to allow a clerk to take attendance you could create an entirely new role and allow that person to take attendance or you could use non-editing teacher as you have mentioned.
I guess what I am not clear about is whether or not you have the basic attendance package installed and functioning properly? From the looks of the photo you have attached I guess you do have it working....
So you just want to create a new role so someone other than the teacher can take attendance? Is that correct?
How you create a role that can do that is beyond me! But is probably needed in this case!
It was a rol problem (I did tests with a wrong user, sorry), the block is working ok, I could take manual attendance finally!!
