My learners receive an email for each course they enroll in - 6 courses, 6 emails!
Can this feature be suppressed?

Having a look at the code, the only way I see to suppress it is by editing your language pack and changing the 'welcometocourse' string (in the moodle.php block) to be an empty string (be sure you don't have any white spaces).
