Hello Moodlers ,
I am Rowan, a student participating in the Google Highly Open Participative Contest.
I am working on issue 51:
Design a database preset for document sharing.
The database preset is attached to this post. Please install it and add at least one entry to view the table. (If you view it with no entries, the CSS will not take effect.)
Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for reviewing,
If you haven't seen it, you should Moodle Tutorials
I really like the preset, its clean and easy to understand and pretty!
I have a few comments and personal opinions (in the spirit of being critical, as I really like it as it is!):
1) I think in a list view it would be good to have alternating table row colours (although I don't know if that is possible within the constraints of the database preset - I guess not)
2) I don't like the fact that the hover effect works on the add entry screen fields
3) On the search screen, the date submitted is a search field but you can't chose anything for it. I also don't like the hover effect and the top green area on the search page
4) Is the css template from chives.de ok to distribute?
Great work and thanks
Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate you taking the time !
2. I will remove it!
3. I will remove it! Moodle on the advanced search screen seems to populate the rows when exporting. In the database that I exported from this was not visible. (Working on now three bug reports )
4. The website that it was available from claimed to be open source but rather be safe than sorry, I have sent the author an email !
I will complete the remainder of these after school today.
Once again thanks for your feedback,
I will be posting the updated file tomorrow (HW took up a little bit more time than expected).
I have corrected all the issues except alternating the table row color. It is proving a little tricky to implement but I will work on it!
Got it to work!
All of your suggestions have been implemented (except when exporting the preset the advanced search isn't exported). I will file a bug report and post it here.
The new file is attached.
Thanks for your really cool database preset for document sharing.
I've added a link to this discussion in the presets documentation so that teachers know about your preset for download. (Hopefully we'll come up with a better database preset storage solution in the future. )
Well done for successfully completing GHOP task 51.
Glad you like the database preset!
I have a version that has optimized CSS and XHTMl, I am just waiting for one of the bugs I reported to be fixed!
Sorry I didn't post sooner!
I have been extremely busy with school. (I have almost 6 competitions along with a term paper due in the next two weeks ) Whoo!
As soon as I have a little bit more time, I would like to work on creating a nice way to display the database presets.
I think the database module is probably under utilized by teachers because of fear of XHTML and CSS. Hopefully, I will be able to dissolve some of those fears by creating some video tutorials on the database module. (I think it would be neat to have one that showed how to create the document sharing module in under X minutes )
Once my time reappears from oblivion I would like to:
- Create More Database Presets
- Record Video Tutorials
- Create a blog for Moodletutorials.org
- Redesign Moodletutorials.org (already working on this)
- Create a theme!
I can't wait for summer because my personal goal is to create a video tutorial for every module exploring the basics.
your plans are great! I like the moodletutorials.org site. Actually I am working on video tutorials that will be availaible on edumoodle.at/kurs very soon (one month) a creative commons licensed moodle course.
As I am working for an austrian institute I do this in german, but perhaps we could share the videos also on moodletutorials.org.
As we are working on a creative commons licensed moodle-course sharing system, we use the database module to list all the courses and provide a search options to browse the courses and find the one which fits best for your lessons.
Nevertheless the database module has some limitations, that make it not very easy to provide these searches. It is planned that for every module used in the course, an automatic link to a help glossary is created. But that is buggy. I already created an issue on the tracker MDL-13006, MDL-13025 . We would also like to have ratings that can be viewed in list view.
Perhaps it would also be necessary to switch to another Content Management System to be able to provide efficient search like you have it in moodletutorials.org. Which CMS do you use on moodletutorials? Would it be easy to combine with moodle to be able to access courses? Nevertheless the most simple solution would be a better database module, so this could all be done an one system.
I wish you all the best for your projects,
Posting your videos would be more than welcomed! One of the goals I have for MoodleTutorials.org is for it to be available in every language that Moodle is available in. You can see a partial list of future improvements for MoodleTutorials.org.
I agree that the database module could with some improvement become an extremely powerful tool! MoodleTutorials uses a video management system (essentially a youtube clone), so it would not be ideal for this application. The whole site will eventually be overhauled, including the backend code.
By the way also voted for your issue that you posted over here.
I just joined moodletutorials.org. Pretty fantastic. I am currently building a joomla site that includes an academy based on moodle. I would like to be able to display videos as you do on your site. Would you be willing to tell us how you created this site and what you are using to display the videos in moodle.
Rowan, thanks for the database preset for sharing documents, it's GREAT!
I am new to the database module so I need help
I imported Rowan's database preset and I have included some additional fields to the "Single" and "Add" templates and they look OK.
However, when I make any modifications to the "List Template" and then I view it, the table formatting does not work. I can't change the heading, include a footer or change any of the field's names in the table because it ruins its formatting.
Can anyone please help me out
I'm having the exact same problem. Did you ever find a solution? I managed to do my edits by disabling the editor and making the changes in the code, but I hate getting HTML under my fingernails, so I'd like a solution if I can find one.
