the next area I'm looking into Moodle for is the recording of assessment.
we are a vocational educational institution where assessment is competency-based: a student cannot pass if they have not yet become competent in all the learning outcomes of that unit, and all units for their course.
(searching through the forums and http://docs.moodle.org/en/Development:Grades I realise this has been touched on, although I'm not sure what the current state of play is)
there are two basic issues that I need to solve:
- a unit has multiple assessments AND each assessment has multiple criteria. All must achieve a "pass" (competency)
- a student is allowed up to three attempts to reach the competency and each attempt (and result) must be recorded.
In the forums there has been mentioned a project called "CanDo" for integration within Moodle but I'm development seems to have "gone off the boil" from 2005
http://www.careercenter.arlington.k12.va.us/cando/index.htm and I'm not sure if yet more disparate software is the best way to go (we'll have to change skills here to PHP as it is, let alone adding Python/Zope expertise as well)
has anyone got Moodle's Gradebook working with Competency-based assessment with multiple re-submits?
What are called "Outcomes" are part of Moodle 1.9 which is in the final Beta stages. It can be incorporated into the gradebook as you desire. The more sophisticated your needs, the more work you will need to put in to set up the conditions, but it seems like this was designed exactly for your needs.
thanks for pointing that out, Gary.
one last question (if I have any more I should go and download the beta and try it out myself...)
"The admin has a site-wide switch to enable/disable outcomes completely for the site."
so if an institution was doing outcomes-based assessment (college level/VET) for half of the programs/qualifications they delivered as well as typical higher education (university) for the other half then two installs of Moodle might be the way forward?
did you find a solution to this complex issue.
We went through a trial process of attempting to include all units, elements and performance criteria for a qualification with 26 units! In hindsight, this was a bit crazy!! There has to be a better way. We want to morph it to something we could use in classroom based assessment and potentially using tablets in the simulated and workplace.
Problem is we have a combination of graded assessments (% with minimum pass), C/NYC etc) that don't seem to want to play nicely to come to a final grade outcome.
Ultimately we are using GradeBook to record the final outcome per Unit, but all the data must be managed offline to then be fed into it. This becomes cumbersome with potential for transcription errors. We want one consistent method for all stakeholders.
Would be good to see what other VET providers are doing.
All the above comments are around Moodle 1.9. Moodle 2.0 introduces course completion, which can be independent of the gradebook.
One thought I would have, is each unit can be a moodle course. If you do wish to use gradebook, you can set the minimum criteria for the course to be minimum grade, and be complete in each assessment section. You can then have a final "Master course" which is the qualification, which can use the plugin 'subcourse' which can link to each of the units.
In this method, the individual unit can be re-usable amongst different qualifications you offer.
I've used gradebook for tracking where a qualification has had a minimum % requirement for knowledge tests, the tests have had different weights and competency requirements have mandatory numbers of observations across a range of statements. All based on UK vocational quals.
Can you share the assessment requirements of your qual so I can see if there is any similarity?
