What would in your opinion be the best way to present a series of maths worked examples to a group of learners? Is there a way that I can tag the examples in moodle like in a blog allowing users to search based on categories?

I am not sure exactly what you want to do here. Do you want the examples to be posted in separate topics as you work through the class or do you want them in one place where they could be searched?

I was thinking that either of those would be very easy to do for a type of searchable examples for maths or many subjects. They would be easily searchable.
Depending of what was wanted a wiki might work also, as that can also have tags added.
There are several possibilities here depending on what is needed.
