There are two ways to upload your sound files. You can create them in something like audacity and save them as mp3 files and then go to the files link in your administration block and create a folder called audio_files or something like that and then upload the files there. The other option is to start a book chapter and then highlight a word and click on the link button and then browse. From here you can create folders and upload files to the same area as before.
Once you have the files uploaded you have two options: 1) create a link to the audio file that you want and then when the student clicks on the word the default player for that audio type will load and the student can listen to the file. The other way is to turn on the media filter in the modules->filters->manage filters area of your site. This will add an embedded player that students can just click on. See the attached graphic. It may not be exactly what you are looking for but it works great. If you have questions please ask away.
