Davide Cervone has updated his jsMath Javascripts to provide a compatibility mode for mimeTeX. This resolves most of the above-noted difficulties. I have uploaded these modifications into the CVS and updated my Moodle server.
Davide also informs me that the problems Andreas experienced with Netscape/Mozilla is due to a bug in Mozilla's font handling and that the simplest way to deal with this is to resize the browser window slightly.
