Can Moodle be used to sell training?

Hi,

We are currently evaluating Moodle and I have a few questions regarding its capabilities:

1. Can Moodle be configured to present a catalog of available courses to users and then allow them to register for a course and collect payment such as from a credit card?

2. Can Moodle be used to manage instructor-led courses and class sessions as well as eLearning courses?

Any feedback will be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

Ed

Search the forums for Paypal, OSCommerce, Authorize.net to find out more about how people are using it with credit cards. Or see Vetscholar.org.nz for an example wink

Re: Can Moodle be used to sell training?

Ed,

You could have your own website display a catalogue of course that link directly to the course on your moodle subnet.

I am sure that the gurus that post here can advise better than I, but you could certainly let students register for a course, but control the access key via another part of your own primary website- one that is secure and capable of collecting credit card details.

I am unsure as to what you mean in point 2.
I use Moodle to compliment traditional training.

Best regards,
Sean.

Regarding question 2 in my post, we have both elearning and instructor led courses that we'd like to include in a single online catalog and allow users to browse and purchase.

Thanks again.

Re: Can Moodle be used to sell training?

Moodle has several options for grading and tracking. We use "upload a single file" activity when there is an assignment (report in our case) for the students to work on offline and submit. There is also an "offline activity" assignment type where you can assign marks for virtually anything.

To further answer your question. You could build a moodle course as a brochure for one of your offline courses. Purchasing would be done the same as an online course. You could even take it further and track grades and assignments for your offline course within the moodle course (an online aspect to an offline course).

Hope this helps,

Mike.

using moodle to host paid content?

If i use an external site to handle payments and give paid users access to the moodle system is that illegal? Is there any legal stipulations that restricts that? Where can i find such info?

Re: using moodle to host paid content?

If you are using SSL which i would recommend ..IT will be on an externel site AS with SSL it has to be on a dedicated IP address

Moodle is a FREE app to use and i think you can use it in that way

if i am worng i am sure one of the OLDER moodle users will correct me

But Selling anything on the net can be dangerous IF you dont use SSL (secure sockets layer) to secure all DATA transmisson's

then all the info you have your customers fill out can be seen on the net buy anyone with half a brain INCULDING CREIT CARD INFO

and buy todays standards NOBODY in there RIGHT mind would use AN UNSECURE site to process cerdit card info just something for you to THINK about

By manage instructor led courses and class sessions, are you asking about timetable management? There is a booking module for resourcing. Check out the documentation here.
You can categorise and subcategorise your courses - so you can map to subject areas or schools. Check out the documentation here.
I guess the real question is what can't Moodle do yet?
Seriously, the question Can Moodle be used to manage instructor-led courses and class sessions as well as eLearning courses? as it reads, is best answered by telling you that instructional designers and trainers can use Moodle as a tool to develop an environment that suits the learners in their varying situations. The key is giving your users the right tools and the right training.
If Moodle is the chosen tool then there are lots of people out there who can help you - starting with the forums here has already set you on the right track to gaining community support and has certainly provided me with excellent and timely feedback and assistanc. For more formal support you can work with a Moodle Partner.
All the best with your decision making.

So far the best I have, yet still the task of creating useful content depends on the teacher. Moodle is the ship to delivery the goods but it takes a teacher of experience to create the goods

Re: Can Moodle be used to sell training?

Ed,

We are attempting to do just that. Our site is still in beta, but we are mostly a videoconference entity and have to manage that through Moodle as well as webconferences, online resources, and the other features Moodle offers.

We are also dealing with members (who get courses for free) and non-members (who will be asked to pay). I'm convinced that Moodle can meet our needs, but it might take a bit of customization and thinking out of the box.

You might find the PayPal and the Face-to-Face modules of interest. They're my latest installs so I don't have them fully implemented yet. But they sure look like they are going to do a great job for us. We've also got an e-mail reminder function installed to (sends participants reminder e-mails before a class).

Re: Can Moodle be used to sell training?

I also sell my courses via Moodle, but wondered how other people handle "packaging" of classes. In other words, how do you register people for more than one class at the same time. (X Discount when you register for two, three classes, etc.) If I use "Meta" courses, it's my understanding that would automatically enroll all the students in all the other courses, but students wouldn't always need to be in multiple courses. (I.E. They just bought one course)

I've been creating a "dummy" Combo course students can enroll in which I just post information about enrollment keys and links to individual courses, but it can be a little cumbersome for students.

I just thought somebody else may have a better solution.

Thanks,

Todd

Hi Todd,

there is no feature in Moodle to do this directly. I only see the option to give the students keywords to the courses and to handle the course discounts outside Moodle.
We are using MoOdalis for such types of course administrations.

Hi Don,

Thank you. Your site looks excellent. Did you partner with someone to do customization work, or did you do yourself?

Thanks again,

Ed

P.S. I hope you don't mind helping out a Yankee fan. smile

Hi Don,

your site looks very impressive smile  Can I ask do you use Moodle for business layer and lower while using another technology for your presentation layer?

Also are you required to include references to Moodle in your site policy/license?

thanks,

Ann
