I've trawled the forums, but I'm obviously missing something here.
Can someone please provide me with a link to instructions on installing gradebook. I'd be very grateful

Gradebook is part of the core moodle installation, it doesn't need to be installed as such. To see the gradebook, as a teacher, you click on "Grades" in the admin block (inside a course).
Gradebook Plus is a small hack that adds some extra functionality to the gradebook and is found at http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=929. There is a readme in the download but essentially you overwrite the grades folder in the moodle root with the one contained in the download.
Gradebook Plus has been overtaken in moodle 1.9 with an enhanced version of the standard gradebook.
