Making links in a wiki

Hello,
I thought I'd finally understood how to make links after reading How To Wiki but I don't understand why this link:
["Lingualnet" http://www.lingual.net/lingualproductitems/index.php] works and this one doesn't : [http://www.lingual.net/lingualproductitems/details.php]

I'm on Moodle 1.6.5

Can someone help?

I've had a lot of problems in the past getting students to understand how to use a wiki. Are my following instructions to students correct ? I'm trying to be short and simple - not comprehensive.

Hi - I recommend using only standard alphanumeric text within []'s on our site.   For external references use the link toolbar in the editor.

Thanks, Chris.

I had a suspicion that it couldn't be as easy as it seemed.wink

Of course, I realise Ludo and his team wouldn't being doing all that work if the existing wiki worked OK.

Cheers,
Glenys

Hello,

Thanks to a suggestion from Pierre POISSON on the French-speaking forum, I've found it's better to use a | after the name of a site (rather than " " around it).

Re: Making links in a wiki

Hello,

any thoughts on how to create a link to a page internal to the wiki that does not show it's full title as the link.

For instance, say I have a page named "How to do something really complicated on this wiki" the link would be:

[ [How to do something really complicated on this wiki] ]

and would appear as

How to do something really complicated on this wiki

But I might want the link to look like:

How to do this

whilst still linking to the "How to do something really complicated on this wiki" page.

I tried:

[ ["How to do this" | How to do something really complicated on this wiki] ]

but that did not seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your help. Bye,

Adam.

Hi Adam,

It's an easy fix, just reverse your entries and leave out the quotes.

Re: Making links in a wiki

Hello again AL,

that is really great, thank you. Is their a list of all of these things somewhere that I can use for reference?

The next thing I need to know is if there is a clever way to link to site Activities or pages elsewhere on the Moodle that the Wiki is on, other than just doing a straightforward full URL link.

Any ideas AL? Thank you for your help,

Adam.

Hi Adam,

Have you discovered that you can link to other activities in the course using the Activity names auto-linking filter?

Re: Making links in a wiki

Hello Helen,

thank you, again, for your help. I had noticed a setting for this whilst looking around and I had a feeling that it might be what I need but it seemed like it might be too complicated for me to think about at the time. Thank you for pointing it out.

On the site that I am using - ZSchool - there is a main forum and a wiki on the front page.

Can the Activity names auto-linking filter be used to link between those?

Or can it be used to link from, say, a course blog post or a message between students to the Activity?

Can I link to the front page forum from a course wiki?

I could not figure this out from the documentation. It sounds really useful though.

Bye,
Adam.

The Activity names auto-linking filter only links when the name of the activity is written in texts within the same course.

The front page of your site can be considered as a course; thus the filter could be used to link the forum and wiki there.

The filter won't make links though in blog posts or messages as these are not within a course, nor will it link to a front page activity and an activity within a different course.

Re: Making links in a wiki

We have had a lot of problems with wiki links with the editor having trouble with pasted in addresses. It turned out the problem was that some words in the URL were being converted by camel case into page names and switching off camel case fixed the problem. I dont know if this helps your problem.
