Moodle documentation: docs.moodle.org - why 1.9 is taking over?

Hi everyone,
I am wondering why the documentation is getting updated for 1.9 already, even though 1.9 is not out yet? I think it is too soon to do so.
E.g. here: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Grades

Also, I am now not able to locate easily previous docs that had been done for 1.6-1.7 for that page.
I have tried to go to History tab, and it looks like it was completely re-created Oct 14 of this year.

I finally found the page here: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Grades_pre-1.9
But I don't even remember how I did it. Do we have some kind of "organizer" page" for previous versions?
Or should we just add a link to 'Grades_pre-1.9' from the existing Grades page?
( I think it will be helpful thoughtful)

I have bookmarked this page as the documentation home page, rather than the default home page, which isn't very useful. You might have a slightly better chance of finding things by starting here. Drilling down into categories works as long as people put some effort into categorizing their pages when they create new ones.

Really John,
The default page is not very useful? Just busting your chops, if categories works for you, that is peachy keen with me big grin. But I alway go to the main page first. Why?

My #1 reason is to make sure Helen has not changed the main page (1.5 million views).
My #2 reason is that I use my watchlist, my contributions and my userpage all the time, they alway appear on the top of every page.
And my #3 reason is that I have never considered a better page to start from until you suggested it. What a decision process that will be for this bald guy.

Seriously, thanks for all your efforts and the wonderful suggestion. Chris

1.9 is going to be released soon. When it is released teachers will need documentation, so it needs to be written now.

All it neads is a link from the top of http://docs.moodle.org/en/Grades to http://docs.moodle.org/en/Grades_pre-1.9.

It is a wiki, anyone could add such a link if they think it is helpful. I just did.

Hi Tim,
How soon is soon? smile and what about those who are looking for the documentation right now?
I still think that new documentation should stay in Development category untill the official release.

I would have edited the page, but I am afraid to make it worth, since I do not understand the logic.
E.g. Where is the Scales page now for any version?
This pre-1.9 grades page shows a link to pre-1.9 Scales page, but the link goes to the empty 1.9 Scales one.
I cannot find stuff to link to, even if I want, since old pages were stripped out.

Hi Elena,

Thanks for pointing out the problem in locating pre-1.9 documentation. approve Hopefully it's clearer now.

As always, the documentation is a work-in-progress, which needs regular reorganisation. Old pages are never stripped out though - they are just renamed.

Please don't be afraid to edit a page in the documentation. All contributions are welcomed, including comments if particular documentation is unclear (see the guidelines for contributors documentation).

Hi Helen,

In this post you say that "Old pages are never stripped out though - they are just renamed." I can't find a way to rename pages in the Moodle documentation wiki. I want to thoroughly update the Questionnaire module documentation in order to reflect recent changes (lots of them). But I find that links to the documentation at the bottom of the Questionnaire pages in a course (Moodle Docs for this page) point to e.g. http://docs.moodle.org/en/mod/questionnaire/view
when in fact the relevant documentation page is at http://docs.moodle.org/en/Questionnaire_module

What should I do? I did not find any explanation about "renaming pages" at http://docs.moodle.org/en/MoodleDocs:Guidelines_for_contributors.

Should I redirect pages? or delete existing pages and create new ones? i.e. should I create a page called http://docs.moodle.org/en/mod/questionnaire/view ? How do I do that?

Thanks for your help,

Joseph

Joseph,
I just started playing with my own installation of MediaWiki. I don't have the answer to your question (it is also my question!), but I'm sure we will find it in the MediaWiki Users' Guide.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for pointing out that an explanation of page renaming is needed in Moodle Docs.

There are 2 ways of renaming a page:
  1. Create a page redirect by editing the page and typing #redirect New page nameFor example, if you want to rename http://docs.moodle.org/en/mod/questionnaire/view, you can edit the page and type #redirect Questionnaire module
  2. Using the move tab (only available for wiki admins). Using the move tab preserves a page's history. If you want to rename a page and preserve the original page's history, please leave a note for me on my wiki talk page (http://docs.moodle.org/en/User_talk:Helen_Foster).
