I hope it is not so late. Excel has some limitations: up 65.536 rows and up 256 columns. Actually, I think that it is a big problem in this module with big surveys . In Questionnaire module, at least, you can export to .csv, so you can import to other program without those limitations (f.e. SPSS).

You could try to extract the responses from .xml:
1.- Do a backup only with the questions and the responses.
2.- Uncompress the .zip file
3.- Now you can access to the responses with a XML editor.
It's a very hard job, but if it's very important it's could be an idea.
