The last week I have experienced a lot of this when trying to do a 'cvs update -dP'
"cvs [update aborted]: connect to cvs.moodle.sourceforge.net(66.35.250.209):2401 failed: Operation timed out"
Any clues?

Uhm, sometimes it fails, really (specially last week). 
Anyway, I think it's recommended (documentation has been updated in this terms) to change the host to:
"cvs.sourceforge.net" (without the moodle)
