VPS Catch-22

VPS Catch-22

Hi,

Going through http://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle I came to see the thumb rule of 1GB RAM for 50 concurrent users. While I do not think it is mentioned for VPS, it may imply around 15 concurrent users for 256 MB RAM. A cheap shared hosting can handle that easily without chat. I have heard that VPS is more powerful than typical shared hosting. But, if it is only powerful for the root access but not for handling larger users then it looks like a dilemma situation.

Any insights/experience is welcome.

Manish.

As I understand it, many VPS systems can burst memory to more than your allocated amount for short periods, provided the other people on the VPS server are not using their full allocation at the time.

Also, the amount of RAM required will depend a lot on what webserver you use - apache needs more space the lighttpd - and on what the users are doing.

Maybe moodledocs needs a section on VPS tuning...
