Algebra activities without writing equations ! Whatever next?

Thanks to John for pointing out the DragMath project. Its also interesting to look at the more recent thread on the LaTeX editor.

While the current DragMath integration into the Moodle editor and the LaTeX gadget are really helpful for typesetting mathematical text, I try to keep in mind the bigger goal of having "meaningful" mathematics in a page. This is something which contains its content as well as just looking correct (and in the case of LaTeX beautiful as well).

In particular it would be great to have student-focused computer algebra tools which can be embedded into web pages. Students and teachers can manipluate these in mathematically meaningful ways on screen - not just read more static text. Books are still more comfortable for this anyway in my view! This is not a hopeless dream, and I know of two things just below the current horizon.

(1) GeoGebra has some algebra features. I believe some developments are taking place here so watch out for announcements on http://www.geogebra.org/.

(2) I am integrating my STACK assessment system into the Moodle quiz module to provide interactive mathematical questions for students. More soon about this.

Chris
