Am I going mad or did there used to be a multiple choice option to display the question labeling as (e.g.,) A. B. C. or 1. 2. 3. ??
It's not there any more. I noticed as the xml export in 1.8.2+ throws notices about it.

) but the numbering option seems to have been introduced in 1.9, not 1.8.2+...

I'm sure I saw it in 1.8.something, especially seeing as I had added provision for it in xml import/export!! Oh well, that's just old age I guess.
