When trying to add users to a group in the latest release of 1.8.2 there is no option to search by name, which can make it time-consuming to scroll and find users (see screenshot). The facility used to exist in 1.6
Is there a reason for this?

I agree. This is a real problem, for we often manually assign group members. This list can be very long (we have one course with over 300 users, split into 14 groups which are assigned manually). In addition, I note that the names are ordered by firstname, rather than lastname. This makes it quite hard to troll through and find the right student. You can, however, type the first letter of the first name, and it will at least hop to the right section . . .
But I don't think there was a search box in 1.6.3 either. There was to add participants to the COURSE, but on my instance assigning to groups was just like it is now (only the interface looked different).
I filed this issue in the tracker regarding the need for search capability:
