The Shanghai World Expo is expected to greet up to 70 million visitors for the exhibition in the next six months of its May-to-October run. More than 440,000 hotel beds would be needed each day during the exposition. But there are only around 500,000 hotel beds available in Shanghai by the end of April, according to the Shanghai-based First Financial Daily in an April 29 report.
To meet the demand for hotel accommodations, the Shanghai government has launched a home stay program beginning in January of this year. More than 500 families have been selected to participate in the home stay hotel program.

State media said that the prices of star and economic chain hotels would increase more than 30% and cancel discounts in the next six months during the World Expo 2010. In the areas surrounding the World Expo Center, said the First Financial Daily on May 2, the prices of hotel accommodations even went up by 89%-150% on the first day of the exposition. For example, a twin bed room of a economic chain hotel near the Expo Center, which used to be priced at 250 yuan ($36) per night, now charges 450 yuan ($67) a night.
