thanks martin ; since i'm just starting i reinstalled moodle and am watching more carefully the consequences of things i do.
actually, it may be related to this : to get moodle to come up after i installed it i had to delete the .htaccess file - my server log claimed not to know about php_flag.
have you come across this before ?
