Sure, performance is not great (I even concede that it sucks with big sites), but missing several pieces only available in 1.8 (and specially in 1.9) is a big problem for some of us.
I know the performance issues will be ironed out (they are mostly a thing of the past in 1.9beta2, and the latest 1.8.3+ is much better that previous versions), but I doubt I'll get those other important pieces[1] backported to 1.6.x
So I'm not sure it's a wise decision for everyone...
