I can't offer any help but I will chime in here to say that I am having the same problem on 1.8.2+ Here's how I ran into this behavior:
I was having problems getting the blog security settings right and wanted to see the course as a user so I enrolled my wife, changed some role settings, unenrolled my wife, changed some role settings, enrolled my wife... now she is unenrolled (after I was sure I got the blog settings right) BUT she is now getting forum posts from that course. So I will add my plea for help with this one.
